Paizo's Pathfinder Tales novels are all of the highest quality. I've mentioned in reviews of other materials that I was very pleased when I was introduced to the novels and the caliber of writing, beginning with Dave Gross's Prince of Wolves.
Mr. Gross has managed to do great things in these novels. He's written engaging characters in a shared fantasy world. He's been consistent to the setting and it's rules while ensuring that those who aren't familiar with those elements have no need to be. He's provided those of us that have been exposed to Pathfinder a lagniappe- figuring out exactly how things and characters work has become a game in and of itself.
One of my favorite things, though, is that Mr. Gross has provided us short stories and novels that show us how the characters grow and change over time. Varian, Radovan, Arnisant, and others explore different places and facets of Golarian, and we readers get to join them in their adventures and watch them grow as complex and multi-dimensional people (and dogs ^_^).
King of Chaos builds on the characters' rich history. This adventure brings the group to the Worldwound- a greatly damaged land infested by demons- in search of the tome used to create the gate to the Abyss in the first place, which might help the people of Golarian fight against it. Besides the fan-favorite protagonists, characters from other stories and novels- both Mr. Gross's and others!- make return appearances, a very nice touch for fans. The book holds many revelations, mysteries, action, and very difficult tests of loyalty. I loved this book, and I greatly look forward to being able to read more of their adventures. I very much want to see how the significant choices made in this novel affect the future.
Wow, it did, but in a way that didn't shy away from stark terror, brutal horrors, and at times, grim, bleak, almost pessimistic futures.
Its a great read every page. The minor characters continue to get a lot of love without seeming to take away from the main story, a real treat, because the list of "lovables" keeps growing.
I cant count how many times I spoke "Yikes!" or "Sheesh" out loud as I read - the humorous situations inspired by Kung Fu movies from Master of Devils are not here. The natural beauty and courtly intrigue of Queen of Thorns are not here. The gothic mystery and old-school detective work of Price of Wolves are not here. This is exactly what a book about the Mendevian Crusade should be - a gore-drenched war at the Gates of the Abyss. Mr Gross did not shy away from taking his beloved characters into a rough scenario and writing it to be believable; the witty banter and playful tete a tete is seamlessly replaced with all-out brutal war, and it works.
I picked up a early release copy at Gen Con Indy and finished it before the convention was over and I enjoyed it. The story is told not only from Radovan and Jaggres point of view but also Oprial as they journey together. It was well written and you really get drawn into the story as you sense the determination and desperation the group needs to go through to complete their quests and along the way you see how each of them mature as well. I good addition to the series and I can not wait for the next story.
