Flying has always been a dream of humans, and Leonardo's fascination with birds and flight was evident in his studies of birds and different human powered flying machines. His Ornithopter design has captured the imagination of people for generations, and we have combined his cool flying machine with one of his bevel gear designs to make a neat model with flapping wings and a pilot with moving legs and arms.

Wings would not move, not good for kid under 10

My daughter did this as a science project. She is 9 so we thought she would be able to do it on her own. After struggling for hours I had to help her out. The directions are not very clear especially which parts to use for what. It took us about 8 hrs to complete, whithout the paint, and few times to disassemble and redo few steps. It was very hard to test without everything being glued. The gears were moving fine until we connected the wings and then it was way too heavy to be able to work. The connection was stripping so we were never able to get the wings to move with just moving the gears, it was very disappointing. She ended up moving them manually from the bottom of the stand which defeated the whole purpose of the gears. If you decide to get this model, make sure you have ample time between steps to leave everything to dry before moving to the next step. Also, make sure you get your own wood glue as the little tube they had in the box was literally enough just for the gears. I don’t see how a kid under 10 can ever do this by themselves, it took me full concentration and few redid myself, nevermind a child.

I love these things it's a great weekend build I would recommend gluing everything The wheel gears won't work if you don't do the glider plane to the base otherwise glue everything that doesn't move except the moving joints and assemble the wings before you mount them on the glider makes it a lot easier to do the rigging with the rope use a good sturdy clip to keep the ropes stretched tight while the glue dries and make sure you let the gear pegs on the round wheels glue set overnight have fun but be glue patient

Granted, the directions leave a bit to be desired, but add a bit of commonsense and construction is a breeze. Parts fit, product quality is good, and it goes together very well. A bit of sanding edges will give you a great finished model. More important is that it works. Let the glue dry, don't rush and I'm sure you will be pleased with the result.

Again, he's extremely handy and very meticulous, so I believe him when he says they're missing. Very disappointing... he'll bother to go to the craft store any find the right sized dowel, but I can't imagine many people would both. And, my the way, the entire reason I ordered on-line for this holiday season was to avoid going shopping in the middle of a pandemic. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Set aside at least a weekend if you're keen to build it in one go. Please note the measurements mentioned in the description - We were pleasantly surprised at just how big this ended up being after building it. For me, it actually seems much larger in real life than in the pictures. This was a gift for someone who enjoys building model kits and they absolutely love it.
