As a former student of Dr. Galles 10 years ago, I was privileged to spend my four years of economic studies under his guidance. The book is nothing short of spectacular. And I think every student, or anyone who is interested in critically looking at social/economic phenomena, should read this book, regardless of where they lie on the political spectrum. On a narrower scope, the book is about economic principle 101. Dr. Galles always has an amazing way of explaining foundational economic issues to his students through copious real life examples rather than invoking complex (and many times, misleading) mathematical models. He is extremely good at tying economic theories to our real world and helping us dig into the nature of the problem. On a larger scale, the book is about freedom, and it's a constant reminder of what defines us to be a free human being, and how freedom makes our society flourish. In contrast, many government policies, regardless of its intention, often leads to unintended consequences through coercion, which in many cases hurt the poor and needy the most. This book is a must-read for those who have the intellectual curiosity as well as passion for social justices and understanding economics.
I am also recommending this book to all college students as I believe that before students learn how to write and speak, they need to learn how to think. This book will teach people how to think critically. Critical thinking ability is one of the most important skills that students need to pick up during college years. And that skill is essential for their future career growth as well as their intellectual maturity. Again, I am highly recommending this book to those who want to grow their intellectual curiosity and those who want to make our life and society beautiful in general.
