Editorial Reviews

Review

"Elizabeth Bailey's book could save your life.  I've been pushing for people to understand how checklists work and can be made to empower them. Bailey has done precisely this for patients- that is, for all of us."
-Atul Gawande, New York Times bestselling author of The Checklist Manifesto

"Elizabeth Bailey's book puts a human face on the devastating toll medical errors have on patients and their families, and clearly shows that when we use checklists to improve the quality of care, we save lives. I have seen the power of this important tool; using checklists in a hospital setting, we nearly eliminated bloodstream infections, a preventable disease that kills about as many people every year as breast cancer. Imagine what the simple checklists in this book can do for you."
-Peter J. Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM, co-author, with Eric Vohr, of Safe Patients, Smart Hospitals: How One Doctor's Checklist Can Help Us Change  Health Care from the Inside Out

"The Patient's Checklist should be in the hands of all families in the event of a hospital stay. The information could save your or a loved one's life."
--Christiane Northrup, M.D., ob/gyn physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause

About the Author

As a producer, director, and vice president of video production for several major record labels, Elizabeth Bailey developed and used checklists to oversee the production of hundreds of music videos. While helping family and friends navigate their hospitalizations, she realized how production checklists could be adapted to successfully manage the complexities of patient care. She is currently completing studies for a Master's in Health Advocacy at Sarah Lawrence College and working part-time as a patient representative at a major teaching hospital. She lives in New York with her husband and son.

Kudos to Elizabeth Bailey for providing patients and caregivers alike a bit of calm in the hospital storm. Her synthesis of useful information into straightforward checklists is the perfect antidote for the often confusing, chaotic, and overwhelming patient experience. True to her word, she offers simple steps to keep us safe, sane, and organized. The Patient's Checklist is a must-have, whether preparing for our own upcoming surgery or assisting with a loved one's sudden hospitalization. This book should be in hospital gift shops everywhere! ~ B.L. Shipley, Board Member, The Connecticut Center for Patient Safety

This book is so important for everyone to read. The information is written in a very understandable style. The author has a great introductory story that gives her credibility. Then the easy nature of the tabs and the checklists make it a short 1-2 hour read for anyone. All of us with family or friends who land in the hospital or have scheduled surgeries should read and review this book prior to choosing the provider and hospital.

Let's see, Where to start? This book is a good idea and is indeed a good book on the subject. Five stars all the way. The story of what happened to her dad WILL make you shake your head in utter disbelief! Lawyer up!

So what? I KNOW how I will die! Doctored and Nursed to death in a corporate setting!
Health Insurance Corporation. Hospital Corporation. Hmmm... If the right one doesn't get you the left one surely will.

The GOOD part is that these corporations WILL collect from Medicare and my other insurance! I'll be dead. They will be richer for it...

I have watched stupid stuff happen to me and to other people I know in a local hospital. If you haven't given it any thought maybe you should. NEVER EVER go into a hospital alone...and take this book. It might help if you start collecting "medical' books too. READ them!

Find out if YOUR hospital has a Patient Advocate BEFORE you go then call them and call your Lawyer...

Things ain't what they used to be!

This book is a phenomenal new tool for patients and family members managing a hospital stay. For cancer patients whose treatment often involves numerous hospitalizations, it is invaluable. I love the author's real world experience and advice: "You want to go in hoping for the best, but you have to prepare --I don't want to say for the worst--but you have to prepare for everything." With this book, you are prepared for everything.

Well, I bought 2 copies. At age 67 and memory-"challenged," 2 is better than 1.
Fact is, the checklists cover most of the concerns we should indeed be
"functionally paranoid" about. My only hope is that it is updated every 5
years AND an edition is released that covers group homes for us elderly.
Absolutely worth the small portion of your hard-earned social security check.

This is the most complete preparation handbook for someone facing hospitalization I've ever seen. It has everything you want and need to know in advance. I highly recommend it.

There is more than enough room in this book/checklist to record important info for people who need to keep track of meds, dr. appointments, etc. My only wish was for the writer to have included a pocket or two at the back of the book for newspaper articles that describe "superbugs" and line infections that patients are contracting in our hospitals.

MY daughter, a Public Health grad student, sent me a website that reviewed this book. Her attached message was that she was getting this book, asap. I ordered it. I, like my sister, have read articles about what one should do if they knew they were going to having surgery and a hospital stay but never really thought it was something that applied to me. This book is proactive, as we all should be, when it comes to advocating for the health and safety of ourselves and our loved ones. I bought one and sent it to my sister today as she prepares herself for an upcoming hospital stay that was not in the cards two days ago.
