This drive changed everything for me. I ran my usual set of benchmarks to see just how it stacked up against my older drive... and my internal. The results blew my mind. I use a MacBook Pro 17" 2011 model with a 7200 RPM drive and I get about 100MB/S for both read and write. In my benchmarks, this USB 3.0 flash drive gets a staggering 210MB/s reading... and 130MB/s writing. That's more than twice the speed reading ... and 30% faster writing. WOW!
One word of caution. I got this performance using a USB 3.0 ExpressCard 34, so you WON'T get this speed using a MacBook Pro less than 17 inches (they don't have ExpressCards in smaller models).
The drive came pre-formatted as Fat32, which makes it very compatible, but to me it's a worthless format for larger volumes because it limits files to 4GB or less, plus it has no built-in recovery options. So, I re-formatted it under Mac and under NTFS (using the Paragon NTFS drivers). I actually got faster performance under NTFS, so I kept it in that format so I can share the drive with my Windows computers.
Also, I should point out that even under USB 2.0, the drive is still faster than older models because it has 8 channels of memory instead of 4 like the previous model. So, in my benchmarks the drive clearly outperforms the older model in 2.0 computers, with reads at 35MB/s and writes at 25 MB/s... compared to 28MB/s read... and only 14MB/S writing. So, even in USB 2.0, writing is now twice as fast.
Bottom line... This drive SMOKES!
**** UPDATE MAY 2016 ****
I should point out one problem I've discovered. The caps on these are very fragile and they can eventually lose their grip, making them useless. I have several of these, including my newest which is only 10 months old and contacted the manufacturer hoping to get a replacement cap under warranty. They sent me to an Ebay seller's page where they sell them for $3, plus $2.60 to ship. Could you imagine that? $2.60 to ship the cap? So, it's nearly $6 to replace the cap. Just keep that in mind.
Shortly after the USB socket became bent. It worked fine for a year this way but eventually failed completely. Luckily I kept a backup so I only lost a small amount of data.
I would recommend this drive for light use but if you want to keep it around with your key chain as I did, it's not tough enough. Also it was difficult to use on some laptops where the USB ports are on the same side as it would block some or all of the other ports without using a hub or extension, which isn't always available.
It was very quick to transfer, felts like an SSD.
UPDATE -1 star for dodgy support:
I contacted Patriot support. They sent me to a link for a .exe file that was supposed to fix the non-mounting problem. It did make the drive mountable again, but it was now showing up in the device manager as a generic USB 2.0 thumbdrive with half the capacity. I couldn't format it past 64GB despite being the 128GB model.
Support had me mail it to them (at my expense). I received no correspondence from them, only an email with a tracking number of the returned shipment a few days later. The drive came back with a "PASSED" sticker on it. Only good part was it had a new cap on it. The drive still showed up as a generic USB 2.0 64GB drive, so they obviously didn't read the support ticket which was helpfully printed out by me and included in the packaging with the drive!
But like many great things, there's just one little problem. The drive is WIDE. I'm talking up to 50% wider than most flash drives and 25% wider than a Patriot Rage (which is wide in its own right).
So what does that mean? On my MacBook Pro it prevents the use of the second USB port (which I use for the keyboard) AND the Thunderbolt port (which I use for the external monitor). So - while using this drive no keyboard no monitor.
On my wife's Dell it prevents the use of the second USB port, the video port, and the POWER PLUG on the left side. It prevents the use of the Ethernet cable and second USB on the right side.
This is an obvious, serious problem. I understand why its so wide, after all its 64gig. What I don't understand is why it didn't come with a high quality, short little 3" USB extension cable like one in the old Griffin 3" USB adapter set or like the shorties in some of the cell phone adapter sets. Really, it couldn't cost more than pennies to add it.
I would definitely give it five stars if it didn't hinder the ports of my laptops.
Amazon now carries this product: USB 3.0 A Male to A Female M/F 90 Degree Angled Adapter Plug Converter
That solves the width problem. With this, I would give it five stars. This should be in the accessories list for this product.
