Top customer reviews
After deciding that the unit wasn't going to work for me, I tore it down and tested the battery capacity. Maybe this helps.
The battery that's inside is an 18650, it's the green colored one on the right. The measured capacity was 2076mAh with a Foxnovo F-2, so it's fairly close to the stated capacity.
4 stars because: When charging a phone & a Kindle Fire simultaneously, or pass-through charging; one needs to check after a reasonable interval to see when near a full charge. As the 1 Amp doesn't shut down at 100% when the 2.5 Amp item isn't yet fully charged. And, when pass-through charging, it just keeps charging anything plugged in. As a result, I only recharge my T-Slim by itself through the 1Amp USB port.
Otherwise, I'm very happy with it.
Importantly, all FUEL+ models will take up to a 2.5 A input, so if you use a iPad wall plug , you can charge your battery pack while still charging your phone at the full 1A, which is huge if you drained both your phone and FUEL+ on your first flight watching movies, and the next flight takes off in 20 minutes...
The 3000 mAh model is tinier than expected- my wife even fit it in a clutch. It's surprisingly light, and charges an iphone fast. It comes with a nice short microUSB cable- I bought a "Hamee MFi Certified Lightning to microUSB Coversion Adapter" on this site to pop onto the end as we switch back and forth between Android and Apple products and Apple's shortest lightning cable is 12" long and this way I don't have to carry both a USB and a lightning cable, just a single microUSB cable, and the Lightning adapter.
I'm planning on buying a larger model to keep in my bag- the 3000 mAh model only outputs 1A, but an iPhone 6 and most flagship Androids can draw more than that, so getting a larger model with a 2.5A output (6000 mAh models and up) will charge tablets, but also charge your phone faster. But I bought this one because it is tiny, and can still give an iPhone 6 a full charge, and it works great if that's what you're looking for, and it's nice and small so it isn't in the way if you need to charge your phone on the couch. But for traveling, I'd buy the 9000 mAh FUEL+.
One potential downside you should be aware of is that while it is plugged into the wall, the four blue LEDs that indicate charge level light up, and all four stay lit when it is fully charged, and since it's white plastic, half of the body glows pretty brightly, so if you were planing on leaving it on a nightstand, it'd be problematic. If you disconnect from the wall, the lights go off.
Recently I went traveling and while everyone else was scrambling to get near the outlets I was happily walking around, charging my phone, while still listening/playing on it. I got 4 full charges from less than 15% to 100% on my Samsung Galaxy S4 before I had to recharge the Patriot FUEL cell.
I am so happy with this purchase!
I purchased a 9000 mAh Fuel+ power bank and have to say that it’s a very welcome surprise to see honesty still does exist in manufacturing. I’ve done a number of tests on a different power banks of varying sizes and claimed outputs and I can honesty say that the Fuel+ power bank that I have tested has been one of the most accurate in terms of there claimed power outputs of all of the varying power banks I’ve tested.
As with any battery regardless of it’s purpose or size there is always going to be a percentage of power loss threw heat, electrical resistances, and a number of other factors. This is something that I’ve seen few power bank manufactures take into consideration. Often times claiming X-amount of electrical power (milliamps or mAh) yet falling disturbingly short of there proclaimed mAh ratings.
For example I will leave names out of it but in recent power bank test I did of a 5000 mAh battery the BEST results I was getting out of it were 27.2% SHORT of there proclaimed mAh abilities. Manufactures often times massively overstate there power banks abilities failing to take electrical losses into equation and subsequently giving a falsely high proclaimed power output instead of stating the legitimate actually USEABLE power there products have to off. However I have to say that at least with the Fuel+ model that I tested they were surprising very much accurate with there proclaimed 9000 mAh output with a general power loss of less then 10%.
Oh of the tests I did involved me draining a 4000 mAh tablet battery to zero percent charge and with the battery bank having two charging ports I decided to plug in my partly drained Ipod as well as the fully drained tablet battery. After allowing both to charge completely the battery bank still was stating more then 50% of it’s power was available which is spot on where it should be given that half of 9000 mAh is 4500 and between the tablet battery as well as my Ipod that was very close to being right around 4500 mAh of batteries to charge. So once again they were surprising accurate in there proclaimed power output abilities which is a very welcome surprise these days.
So often in manufacturing especially online you’ll see fake five star reviews from manufactures trying to get there low quality horrible products overall ratings higher to fool consumers into thinking there products are decent when they quite simply are garbage. But I have to say that I’m very surprised at how with Fuel+ they actually chose to be honest and at least in the example I have they were able to back up there claims. Honesty does exist in manufacturing still it seems.
Now I will say this in closing though. As with all batteries they will deteriorate over time as with most electronics in general. So I don’t know what the longevity of a device like this would be over a few years worth or use. However to counter that point I have a friend who is a wild-land firefighter who uses one of the 9000 mAh battery banks Fuel+ sells and has been using it for two fire seasons now without any complaints or failures and we all know how much abuse fire fighting equipment can take. Is it a robust outdoor power bank? No. Not even remotely. Though the build quality is good enough to survive what he puts it threw and between the two of us we have yet to see one of these fail to perform although we aren‘t purposely trying to abuse them either. So while I don’t know what the longevity of a battery like this would be, I can say that so far at least they are performing as they should.
It’s nice to see a manufacture being honest with it’s customers at least within the limitations of the tests I’ve put mine threw in regards to the stated power abilities of these power banks. It’s hard to find ones that actually live up to even half there proclaimed output in a lot of cases. I know personally I’d much rather buy a power bank that had a lower stated power output but was actually honestly able to come close to reaching that stated output then buy one that claims three times as much power but falls horrifically short of that.
So with all that said would I recommend this product? Absolutely. So far they can handle what we throw at them and they never fail to do what we ask. Plus they charge pretty quickly both accepting a charge as well as being able to charge devices quickly as well. But most importantly at least in our experiences with Fuel+ they are HONEST in what they claim there products can do. Five stars to Fuel+ from a real actual person.
