Now along comes the Gauntlet 320GB wireless external drive. As Goldilocks would say, this one is *just right*. The physical size is nice, about what you would expect for a portable HDD, with a sculpted bezel case kind of like an ice cream sandwich. But what's even better is that it includes a rechargeable battery, which makes this a true mobile device.
What's it for?
You can copy any files you want to it. You can use the drive to store images for slideshows or presentations. You can store your music library for music streaming. Or my favorite use is to store movies on it, so I can watch movies on the road.
The setup was very easy. First I plugged in the power overnight so the battery would be fully charged. The next day I plugged in the USB cable and connected it to my PC so I could transfer the content. I copied about 50GB of movies, which took almost a half hour. That seems like a long time, but 50GB is a lot of content.
While that was copying, I installed the Gauntlet Connect app on my Kindle Fire and then downloaded the iOS version and installed it on my iPhone.Read more ›

If you are like me then you are into the digital world and love your smart phones and tablets. I literally have thousands of songs and audio books, hundreds of movies and thousands of photos in my digital library. The biggest problem is that the memory space available on some of my digital devices is limited and not expandable so I cannot take it all with me.
The storage limit of your electronic tablets and smart phones has just exploded. Patriot Memory has come out with several new products that allow you to set up a portable battery powered disk drive with WIFI connection to your mobile devices. This powerful product allows you to connect your Kindle Fire for example and wirelessly stream entertainment files and data to it. Now instead of having an 8 GIG limitation for your Kindle File you can add hundreds of GIGs of entertainment for your use anywhere you travel. It is like walking around with your own personal cloud storage all the time. The drive contains its own WIFI transmitter/receiver and acts as its own network to connect to your devices regardless of where you are located.
This WIFI drive is also ideal for business use to carry around more data or project files that you need on a business trip. I can remember once when going to Europe to present the business plan. The airport security guard dropped my new tablet computer and my entire presentation and business plan was wiped out when he destroyed my hard drive. I wish I had been able to carry one of these drives on that trip as it would have made life a lot easier.Read more ›
But they have some funky problems getting connected to my PC's. I have a Windows 7 and two Windows 8.1 laptops. Working via the USB cable went fine, but connecting wirelessly to a PC is neither standard nor well documented. I wrote two different emails to their support and NEVER received an answer. I sent the first unit back to Amazon, because I could not get it to connect at all. Amazon, of course, replaced it immediately. I worked days...literally days...getting this unit to connect wirelessly to my PC's. Finally, I came across a method that seems to work.
Using the Windows Explorer, under "This PC" and the tab "Computer", install this device using "Add a Network Location". Since the DHCP client program in the driver does not seem to send the "host name" to the DHCP server (generally your router), you will likely have to use the IP address. This is available from the "GAUNTLETNODE" SSID wireless "network" access. Unfortunately, I'm not yet sure what will happen when the DHCP assignment expires and the IP address changes. I suspect you will have to go through the "Add Network Location" process again.
However, after doing that, you have an entry under "This PC" in Windows Explorer. I renamed this "Patriot" and can use that in pathnames to set up backup and archive files for applications, such as Microsoft Outlook.Read more ›
