MaKayla and Dustin have something in common....something that neither of them realize at first. What they do realize at first is that there is an undeniable spark-flying attraction between them. But the one thing that they have in common is something that neither of them expects.
MaKayla is trying to recover from her husband's death and live a new life...one that is a bit more adventurous than when she was married. Taking a leap of faith, she decides that helping the sexy night club owner is just the thing she needs. Especially since the tingle of excitement she feels when she's around him can't be denied.
Dustin is a single dad who's trying to raise his daughter and make his night club a success. Hiring MaKayla to help with the publicity side of things might just be what he needs. But can he keep it purely professional? Or will the thoughts he has and the feelings he feels be more of a personal level for them?
With one secret between them, will these two amazing characters be able to find the romance that they both seek? Or will the secrets be enough to destroy second chances?
Ms. Cloutier captured the essence of second chances beautifully in this heartwarming story. With some laughs here and there, and lots of great passion, this is a story that is worthy of 5 Books and high recommendation! I'm so glad that this is just the start to a new series by a truly talented author. I am already anxious for the second book in this series! I can't wait to see how it plays out! If it's anything like this love story was, it will take your breath away again! Fantastic job, Ms. Cloutier!

MaKayla insists on a purely business relationship when she takes on the PR work for Dustin's business and tries to ignore her growing attraction to him. When she realises he was the man who caused the car accident which killed her husband three years earlier, she has even more reason to want to push him away.
There seems to be more keeping them apart than drawing them together, but this is a story of how love can overcome even seemingly impossible odds, as they both realise they have found something very special in each other.
'The Patriot Girl' is a heartwarming romance which will have you sharing all MaKayla's doubts, insecurities, heartbreak and - eventually - happiness. Highly recommended!
My only big problem with the book was all the little secondary storyline questions that were left unanswered. Like .... What happened to Tiffany to make her not show up to meet Buck? Did Tiffany's Dad like the "gift?" Will MaKayla and Dustin have more kids? What did MaKayla's in-laws think of Dustin? ... etc. So, I hope that within the next book in this series they will answer some of these questions and more. =0)
Otherwise, I recommend this novel to those of you who like reading a dramatic-packed contemporary romance!!

What a fantastic book. I loved the way Toni Lynn Cloutier put the novel together. All the details of what happened that horrible day three years ago is revealed very slowly throughout the book. You get little hints of what exactly happened, but don't know all of it for sure until almost the very end.
The hard thing about this story is the incredible chemistry between Dustin and MaKayla. It's undeniable, incredibly powerful, and immediate between the two of them. But what neither of them realize early on is that they share the same tragic past that has ruined both their lives. It's devastating to MaKayla when she discovers it because she feels like she is dishonoring her husband's memory to become with the man who ultimately was responsible for his death.
This is an emotional read, but I found it incredibly entertaining and easy to read rather than heartbreaking. It could have gone so easily into the heartbreaking aspect, but there are moments (usually provided by MaKayla's friend Jodi) that keep the book from becoming too heavy. There are a mix of fabulous characters in this book:
*Dana- Dustin's twin sister who's also an FBI agent (I hope she has a book soon)
*Jodi-- MaKayla's sex obsessed friend
*Tammy-- MaKayla's son's girlfriend...their pity-shopping trip is fabulous and I loved that they had these little bonding moments
*Alex- MaKayla's growing up son who always says the perfect things. He knows what she needs and is trying to make sure she gets it. I loved his actions throughout the book.
Neither MaKayla nor Dustin has felt the urge to connect with another love interest since the deaths of their spouses. That alone makes the irony of their situation all that more painful. They truly come to love each other before they truly become romantic with each other and that's a gorgeous thing. It really was a fabulous book!
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
