He served with British Special Operations Forces, with the Parachute Regiment which is Britain's elite quick reaction force and which also augments the UK Special Forces Support Group (SFSG). He served on multiple operational deployments, including to Afghanistan immediately post-9/11, and also a tour training and selecting recruits for the Regiment. He then spent five years serving as a security contractor in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, a year was based out of Fallujah, the rest variously based out of Baghdad and country-wide. Two years in Afghanistan were based in Helmand Province. These were operational security roles that included exposure to multiple different training methods and operational schools of thought, as well as both high profile and low profile mobile operations across Iraq and Afghanistan. He then joined the U.S. Army Reserves and has trained as both Combat Medic and Civil Affairs specialist. Max is a tactical trainer and author, a professional soldier with extensive experience in British elite forces and as a paramilitary contractor. Max was enlisted and later commissioned, via the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, into the Parachute Regiment. The Parachute Regiment is an elite VHR airborne infantry unit, comparable to the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment, accessible only via the renowned ‘Pegasus Company’ Selection course. Max served in 1 and 2 PARA. Of the three PARA battalions, 2 and 3 PARA serve in 16 Air Assault Brigade as the UK’s Rapid Response Force, with one battalion at permanent high readiness for worldwide intervention operations. Max served in Para Reg when it was utilized to provide elite airborne infantry support to UKSF, as the forefathers of the SFSG. With training and operations validating the concept, including Op Barras (Sierra Leone), 1 PARA was placed permanently in role as part of the SFSG.

Additionally, Max served on a number of combat deployments. Additional overseas assignments saw the opportunity to train, or train with, allied nations, including the U.S. Military. Roles which Max filled included rifle platoon commander, patrol leader, recruit instructor (platoon commander) at the PARA Training Depot, anti-armor platoon commander (fire support company), operations officer and command on deployments. After successful completion of UKSF selection, but non-completion of continuation due to injuries sustained, Max completed one final deployment; having reached a career point where staff duty was unavoidable, Max made the decision to resign from the service. After leaving the British Army, Max spent a further five years working operationally as a paramilitary contractor in both Iraq and Afghanistan; the latter two years based in Helmand Province working alongside the UK Military. It is this sort of operational deployment at small team level that drives Max, tied as it is to the art of small unit tactics.

Since 2013, Max has run Max Velocity Tactical (MVT), a training company conceived to offer professional combat training for responsible citizens. As the Velocity Training Center (VTC) has grown into a state of the art training venue, MVT also took on pre-deployment training for U.S. SOF. This runs the spectrum from facility utilization to tailored training packages specializing in Small Unit Tactics, utilizing support helicopter insertion, demolition and support weapons, as desired.

I think this book is a 5 star, keeping in mind what the book is and is not, and what the purpose of a book like this is.
It's perfect for what I think the author intended and for what my interests are, but not necessarily what every reader is seeking.

The story and plot of this book is a continuation of Patriot Dawn. Patriot Rising is the same type of book as its predecessor, which is a post-SHTF storyline used to illustrate various forms of tactics survivors might need, and to illustrate the various threats these survivors might face.
My interest in the books is to reflect upon what types of threats I as a private citizen might face if some disaster or "manmade disaster" (to use current political-speak terminology) happened which interrupts all of the services and goods that our modern civilization and comfortable way of life depend on. It doesn't matter what variety of disaster it might be, whether EMP, or war, or cyber attack, or the Washington DC basketball team winning the championship, (or losing to another team), there will be riots and other unpleasantness coming.
The story in this book follows a months-long+ scenario of all kinds of things breaking down and conditions getting more dangerous as people get more desperate for food, shelter, security, and other things.
I found the scenario and storyline to be well-thought out and quick-reading, but even better, I really liked being able to "see" situations developing and trying to think about what I might do if I was there, and then continuing with the characters to see how things unfolded going that way. The author combines his deep experience with small unit and light infantry tactics from military (British Army and US Army) and private security contractor teams to describe how things could unfold.
Just like the first book, Patriot Dawn, this results in a tactical manual folded into a story. Reading the story is an effective way to learn things, easier going than reading dry reference materials such as various FMs and official publications. (Read those, but read this to get a better idea of whether you really understand it or not)
Good stuff! I got a little extra from the book having visited Romney WV previously, so the parts of the story that take place there were a bit easier for me to visualize as opposed to somewhere else.

I learned a great deal about military tactics and procedures, and here is something strange: Max Alexander goes into specific detail on where and how things happen, naming streets and terrain features and showing maps, but if you are like me and not familiar with the area around the Shenandoah Valley, it all goes over your head. He provides maps and tactical diagrams, but they don't show up worth beans on the Kindle. The "strange" part is that I would expect that to make me lose interest, but it did not. I just had to re-read a paragraph now and then to get a sense of the relationships between the various battle elements. and often I didn't, but it didn't matter. For me the greatest value was in getting a real feel for what it is like to be in the middle of a military firefight for hours and doing your job by the book, by the training, by the tactics, regardless, and realizing that in spite of a full-on assault with bullets and explosions and incredible noise all around you, you CAN survive if you take your training seriously and do what needs to be done. Someone once said, "Even in the middle of a firefight, there is still a lot more air than meat." I said above there is "some" violence, and this is not true: There is a LOT of warfare violence for LONG periods of time, but it is not "graphic" in terms of describing gore in detail, and it is not overwhelming to the point of not wanting to read any more. I do make it a practice to set the book down and let my subconscious process what I have read now and then, but then isn't so much because of the violence as it is because of the wealth of detail and valuable information that is imparted by the story. I don't remember any sexual activity other than by passing inference, and I THINK it was written in the third person.

This is an outstanding sequel to Patriot Dawn that picks up right where you left off.

This is a depiction of a chilling possible future where a tyrannical Government tries to strip away peoples freedoms in it's quest for power, domination, and control. The action is exceptionally realistic in detail and the characters will remind you of the people in your own lives, especially if you have served in the military.

Who will enjoy reading this fine book?

If you are a fan of Post-Apocalyptic/Dystopian Fiction this will certainly "fill the bill!"

If you enjoy realistic depictions of Combat this is as good as it gets in Fiction.

Finally if you really feel that the future is uncertain and there is a need to make yourself ready for such dire times, this book may very well lead you on a path to achieving this goal. If this is you I would suggest buying Max's Non-Fiction book Contact!: A Tactical Manual for Post Collapse Survival .

Max does a fine job of balancing realistic (yes, there's that word again) action with sufficient detail to demonstrate Small Unit Tactics, but this is done without bogging down the pace of the story. As a Veteran, many of the characters come across as old friends which adds to the concern for their survival under such desperate situations I felt while reading. I truly felt a connection to the characters.

I highly recommend this series!

If you haven't read Patriot Dawn: The Resistance Rises start with it first and enjoy the fact that you will have both books available without the normal wait time between books that fans have to suffer through!
