I've had this flash drive longer than any other. It has been a life saver on numerous occasions when I've had to move huge amounts of data and didn't want to rely on slow network speeds, and this is perhaps the toughest flash drive I've ever owned.
To date, this drive has survived the following:
1. It's been through the washer, at least three times. (dryer twice)
2. It's been stepped on more times than I can count.
3. Children under the age of 5 used it as a plaything for an entire day once without my knowledge, only found out when they broke the black plastic end cap off. (fixed with glue, still working)
4. And finally, to add ultimate insult to injury, I ran over it once with a car.
Despite my best efforts, this drive just won't die. I'm thoroughly impressed with this product and would buy another in a heart beat.
I want Size second, and this drive is good and bad. It's better then a small Hard-Drive, but not as good as a standard USB drive, at all. It's WAY to wide. With this plugged in, you just gave up using the drives to the left and right of the USB port it uses. It comes with a USB cable, so you can still use the other drive, but who wants to carry that around with them?
The lanyard (the neck cord) it comes with is just a string. You can cut one of your shoe-laces, and it will look just as fashionable.
The worst part of this is BY FARRRRR... the Cap.
The Cap SUCKS.
It falls off in your pocket, in your bag, in your drawer.
I spend a lot of time digging around for that stupid thing.
Very, very bad design. They should take a tip from OCZ and put that little rubber nub for holding the cap, or (at the very least) make the cap stick to the USB a bit better. It falls off just by shaking it.
It's reliable, so far hasn't hiccuped and I've thrown 60 GB transfers at it. The read and write speeds are always exaggerated. The best write speed I've typically ever seen realized is about 17 mb/s such as with my Sandisk Cruzer Contour 16 GB and about 11/11 on my Corsair 16GB - but this one runs about 9.5 mb/s read and 11 mb/s write. I didn't use a benchmark program to get that, I just looked at what I realistically got when copying large files.
The read/write light on the back is a little hard to see as it is wedged underneath the loop they give you to attach the talisman. I like the cap as it snaps on very tightly so you won't lose it - but the fit is so tight that you can't snap it onto the back if you've got the talisman looped through down there. I dig the color but I wish you could get the 64 in black like the 128.
One user out of 20 or so on Newegg reports that the thing dies after a handful of complete writes and re-writes, but it sounds like Patriot is upholding their warranty terms and replacing it.
I'll have to modify my review later if this thing dies.
Although the Patriot worked great in all the PC's I tried it, it did would initially not work with the Motorola. I assumed the problem was the formatting (most USB players can only use FAT32), but when checking this under Windows7 and XP, it indicated it WAS FAT32.
Eventually, I decided to reformat anyway. I used the Windows Fat 32 format tool from [...] to do a full format(because Win7 can't format FAT32 itself). This fixed the problem, and it's now working great. I suspect that you would have to do the same if planning to use with other audio devices that support USB.
Only time will tell how reliable this is - cars are a tough place for electronics, so I'll try and report back in a few months time.
It comes with a short wire that has a male and a female USB connection, which is very helpful if you are using two adjacent USB connections on the laptop or netbook, because the drive itself is notably wider than the width of a USB connector.
I already had a 32-GB drive from Patriot, which I also love. However, was getting full and I wanted additional, easy-to-use backup. The 64-GB drive is perfect for my uses. The price also is excellent, especially when compared to the 128-GB stick.
This being said, I gave it 3 stars for robustness since everything else seems to work well and is fairly stable.
The read/write speed on this device is amazing. I haven't previously had any extreme performance or high speed USB drives, but this drive is extremely high speed. I'm able to run OS's on this thing without much (if any) perceivable lag. (Win7 Ultimate, Ubuntu) So as it comes to speed of the read/write capabilities, I would say the performance is great.
Ease of use is about as easy as it gets. Plug it in and it's ready to go.
Overall a good product for the price, competitors have similar products with less speed for higher prices. I highly recommend this product.
