Additional Comments/Questions after finishing the book:
In the chapter about Walt Disney you should have mentioned something about his father and how it influenced him (learned in Saving Mr. Banks).
- Is there a design to the graphics on the chapter letter titles? I noticed quite a few had "don't tread on me" but didn't see a connection.
- I wonder if you are related to Professor McGonigle of the wizarding world (this might explain your ability to be in more than one place at once).
- My great grandfather on my mom's side came through Ellis Island and I was told they changed his name to make him more Americanized. But according to your book he changed his own name (Barrosopolis to Barros). Makes sense that he would do that I suppose because he opened a restaurant that served diner food (hamburgers, etc) opposed to the Greek food one would expect.
- Didn't Henry Ford loose a son to a car accident - I thought that was mentioned in a movie about a famous race horse?
- The interstate chapter was interesting with the numbering convention....however back home in AR they recently renamed I-540 to be I-49 but it's the same straight road (does not encircle anything).
- In addition to revolutionizing farming did Cyrus McCormick also develop the famous pancakes?
- The national debt chapter was very interesting.....didn't realize it has actually been worse than it currently is....nice to know past presidents have gotten it down to zero.
- I was going to ask if Corning invented Corning Ware....but I can't find the chapter where I saw his name.
- The Statue of Liberty chapter is very interesting....I always thought the French just gave us a huge statue one day....how and why it was constructed is very interesting.
- I earned my pilots license in 2003 (and unfortunately have let it expire) and on the front and back it has a graphic of the Wright Brothers due to it being the 100th anniversary of the first flight...pretty cool momento that now lives in a scrapbook.
The author does a great job of interleaving historical events with personal sides of these events, which makes them more real and accessible. It is too bad we don't teach history to our kids this way. Instead we make them memorize stupid dates and names, but do not provide them with the actual importance of the event, the context of the event and why the event was important.
Neat book, I bought my mom a copy and will tell others about it!
