If you are looking for a pattern making instructional book this will work. You need to be aware that the industry uses a medium as the standard sample size. This corresponds to a 40 inch chest, 15 to 15.5 inch neck and a 34 inch sleeve measured from the center back neck to the bend of the wrist. The standard pattern size in this book and another book available on Amazon is a size 38 inch chest. In the past this was a size small. The Sample Size 40 is normally graded to obtain the smaller and larger sizes using a 2 inch grade. In addition, much of the terminology is not what is normally used in the industry.
If you are looking for a pattern making book for men's wear without any reference to women's wear this is a decent book.

Love this book. Detailed and informative. Pretty thorough glossary. I would note that the book is very much what it says that it is. I am a beginner, and this works for beginners. But you should own a tailoring form and have access to necessary tools and stitching machines. This book does not go into the construction of garments. It covers basic pattern development for a number of garments only. For actual construction of garments you will need a teacher, or a lot of patience, and another reference book on tailoring as construction is an entirely different matter. One thing that I really like about this book is that it is very current. The test patterns are basic but contemporary. That's rare in the world of menswear patterns which are hard to find and, when you do dig one up, it seems to always be from the late 80's or earlier and horrible. This book provides a basic pattern for cargo pants, flat and pleat-front pants, a parka, a hoodie, a casual shirt, a blazer, a double breasted blazer, and jeans. Oddly there is a pattern for a bib shirt as well, but hey, maybe someone wants a bib shirt. Very good book.Make the muslin!

Great book, but some mistakes and sloper instructions doesn't work for all sizes.
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019Verified Purchase
Love this book, however the given measurements for each project don't work if you are a small size. I bought this to help with making patterns for myself, making the pant sloper is almost impossible if you are anything smaller than a size 34. I tried using my own personal measurements and measurements closest to me in the given size charts. Once you get to a certain step things don't add up at all. It's probably easiest to start at a bigger size and then grade the pattern down. But that in itself is A LOT of work. I ran into this problem again when attempting to make the fitted blazer sloper. I also noticed inconsistencies throughout the book where the text says a certain measurement but the provided drawings/images show something slightly different.
If you are more of an average size and can get your measurements to work with the instructions this book is great. If you're skinny like myself than you're gonna have to put in quite a bit of extra work in especially in the pant department. Once you have all your base patterns perfect, the rest is pretty helpful.

Confusing / in part in inches and then without explanation in cm. / no formula for working with one's own measurements / drawings are misleading regarding the actual distance between vital horizontal lines /

Very early on in this book I realized that I will have to re-work the patterns to make sense and fit my needs. This is a great book in terms of modern design, but in the technically of it it’s just ok , at best. It shows no way how they get there measurements. It is definitely a trial and error book so if you have the patience it may be for you.

The book is not for beginners, although not difficult, but it's best the beginner has help from a knowledgeable individual.
It's very wordy (not as in giving detailed instructions but inserting unnecessary words for instruction).
Some of the measurements within the instructions do not match the illustrations
Some of the patterns are made for Knit but there isn't any instructions on converting the pattern to a knit pattern.
Beside those flaws the book is wonderfully Illustrated.

You will love it. Published in 2013 in London, this is an excellent up-to-date book for anyone who wants to sew seriously for men. It takes you through the entire pattern-drafting process and contains many patterns to draft in both knits and wovens. It also covers many alteration options for a great fit. Note that the body size charts of Chinese, U.S. and European measurements on pages 32 and 33 are in centimeters not inches but are easily converted by looking at both sides of your tape measure or using a conversion chart on the internet.

Very good book. I just wish they would tell you how to arrive at some of the measurements given, rather than just giving the reader a measurement to draft with no explanation of where that number came from. It would make it much easier for adapting the patterns/slopers to other sizes.

Good, even for a beginner

I've never drafted a pattern before, having only sewn a few commercial patterns. However, the lack of decent menswear patterns made me want to learn. This book does not assume that you're already an expert in drafting women's patterns but starts from scratch. I've so far managed to draft a decent body and arm block without much trouble. Next is to try one of the patterns. There are a good selection of patterns in the book, from granddad shirts to overcoats. About the only thing it doesn't have is a pattern for a waistcoat.
As well as have a good set of patterns, each one is also a tutorial on how to modify the basic block pattern in different way, eg lower the neck or add raglan sleeves, so by the end of it you should have the knowledge of how to modify things to make your own pattern.
I've only found two issues with the book. Firstly ease is added to the basic blocks but the the sleeve block does not contain any ease around the bicep so you'll need to add some. Secondly when it says draw a line for example 38cm + 2cm, it sometimes takes a few readings to work out how to adjust those lengths for your own measurements.

A great pattern cutting book for menswear designers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 26, 2016Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic pattern cutting book. It is the easiest I have found so far which focuses on menswear.
It is very thorough, with the introductory chapters giving a lot of useful information and tips on taking measurements and on pattern cutting. The subsequent chapters go into much detail on how to draft several shirt, trouser and outerwear pattern pieces. There are a number of books recommended at the end for further reading, which I think is great.
The marketing of the book on Amazon is also very helpful, with the "Look Inside" facility providing vital "look before you buy" information. I was able to look at the Table of Contents (which shows the various patterns covered by the book) and some of the actual content, which helped influence my decision to purchase the book.
I find the illustrative pictures throughout the book, along with the measurements and labelling on each drawing to be very helpful. It also indicates the fabric requirements (e.g., "Cut 1 Self", "Cut 1 PR Self", "Cut 1 Fuse", etc.).
I wish the book had a pattern for a waistcoat because I mainly sew formalwear. However, I can overlook this because of the presence of a number of varied patterns within the book.
The only thing I don't like about it is that quite often, the instructions ask for an adjustment to be made in the pattern-drafting process (for example, "At the bottom of this line measure 3cm back up and make a mark") without actually giving a reason for the adjustment. I like to understand why I am making an adjustment, because in some cases, it is either unnecessary or not enough (for example, if I am aiming for a different fit or aesthetic in the finished product). It makes it somewhat tricky, especially when I am drafting a pattern for a model whose size varies significantly from the model size on which the pattern instructions are based. I tend to do a pro-rata calculation to adapt the requested adjustment to my draft. I'd give it four stars for this sole reason, but that would be a bit of a disservice to the overall brilliance of the book. Five stars it is!

It's in metric. Grrrrr.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 2019Verified Purchase
In metric, which is a pain for people who use the old reliable imperial. This was a bit disappointing as I thought I had read a review that said it was in imperial. Anyhow, I'll have to go through the painstaking process of having to convert it all. The book does have a vast amount of information on how to draft different styles of pattern. I'm however used to drafting the centre front on the left and centre back on the right, this book is the other way around, so I'll have to incorporate it's ideas rather than directly follow it. Not exactly what I was looking for, but never mind.
