Editorial Reviews

Review

"Patterns of World History is an excellent introduction for students into the vast subject of world history. The text's strength is its use of the overlaying theme of 'patterns.' For students, these patterns help them understand global history in a meaningful way. It gives them tools to understand how societies came about, how they interacted and what caused change in them. For instructors, the text provides an effective and flexible framework for engaging students to read, think, and write about world history--students will be 'seeing patterns'in no time."--Robert Bond, San Diego Mesa College

"Patterns of World History has set a new high benchmark for world history textbooks."--Candace Gregory, Sacramento State University

I'm surprised by the other reviews, but I've read this book in class and my classmates and I have made a game of looking up the facts as we read them and seeing how wrong the book is on basic things, like dates and who did what. Wikipedia is coming out ahead on factual accuracy. I'm very bummed considering how expensive the book. My teachers would have killed me if I had been so casual with things like who was the last ruler in the Stuart dynasty for England (easy thing to look up anywhere - It's Anne and not Mary or William), or that there were Dutch missionaries in Japan in the 17th century. The whole reason that the Japanese wanted to trade with the Dutch and not the Portuguese was that the Portuguese brought Jesuits with them and the Dutch only cared about trade. I learned that in an intro to Asia class.
A lot of the text is fine and the pictures are good, but if I am going to buy a book and have to read it for a class, I want it to be accurate. I don't think high school students should read this or they are going to have a lot of relearning to do when they take a World Civ class as part of their Gen Ed requirements. You want smart students, give them accurate books to read, and show them that accuracy matters. Teachers want it from students, and students need it in their books.

This is an excellent book.

The text is well researched and very readable and is superbly organised. Questions are posed at the beginning of chapters to help to direct the reader and there are more questions at the end of chapters to help the reader to consolidate his/her understanding. There are also timelines, maps, diagrams and photographs which complement the text perfectly.

This book is ideal for students of history as well as for anyone with an interest in understanding how the world developed the way it did.

I purchased this used text online. It happened to be in perfect shape and was a bargain. I likely would not have purchased this optional text otherwise.

Patterns of World History: Since 1760 is a well-written, concise examination of major (and not so major) historical events that took place in the last quarter of a millenium. It helps the reader reflect on events and their causes and provides insight into the forces that shape history. Its broad perspective offers a bird's eye view of historical facts and helps the reader make connections of the underlying motives and the results of these facts. I strongly recommend it to anyone that is interested in Modern History beyond the bare facts. The companion website is a great supplement to the book, too.
