Two Great Generals of World War II

You can see in these 420 pages the author deep knowledge of the history of World War II and a book that provide the right level of information in narrating the lives of two great generals of this war. Both these generals, as you will see, had very different backgrounds, different ways of commands and personalities and it is inevitable to have more sympathy with one them after reading the book. To be a General is a huge responsability which requires several characteristics depending on the job or task, that general will execute. What I admire about Rommel was his previous experience in World War I and for Patton, his knowledge of history and his sense of humor. Patton was an old fashioned soldier, a romantic warrior, with an undoubtedly very peculiar personality. Rommel was an exceptional leader and Feldmarschall that could not flank Hitler's lunatic ideas, finally paying with his life.
I just have one complain with the book, and it is the absolutely lack of maps or bibliography, at least in the paperback. Despite the later, this is a book to recommend.

Historical comparison of 2 major WW II generals

While the subject matter is a "a natural" this book would have been MUCH better if author had included the other major leaders who studied and anticipated before EWW II the use of tanks. THere were 5 such men, who argued for the manufacture of tanks and who made studies of their application and usage should a second war develop in Europe. I mean Gen De Gaulle,(France) P.M. Churchill (Great Britain) and the German Field Marshall Guderian. Then the author would not have been bogged down in details which do not push the comparison between just Patton and Rommel forward. Furthermore if the author had included quotations from the printed books or articles by all five men and showed where their ideas, published before the second world war, were applied during WW II, he would have produced an edifying and original book.

As an arm-chair student of the war,(I was five when it ended) I have never seen the five grouped and compared to one another in any one place, ready for those who study the war with seriousness of purpose.

Sorry but this book is only middling as is, and its depths of study are shallow lacking these quotations. The book does not illuminate any new aspects of the life or wartime efforts of either of these two important men, nor does it put them into the context of the other men against whom or with whom they went to war.
Futhermore this is a most serious topic and deeper scholarship would have been appreciated by many, I would think. Goldie Kossow

I bought this book in hopes of pining down an actual time line of events between Rommel, and Patton.
It started out OK, but between the poor grammer, spelling, typos, wrong dates of events, and the use of multiple paragraphs, when one sentence, or 2 at the most would have been perfect. I was greatly disapointed, and feel if you are truely looking for historical facts on Rommel, then one would do best with those who were the closest to him. Such as Manfred his Son, and of course Desmond Young who got the facts as they were still fresh and not so over the top at the time.

I bought this book at an airport bookstore, and really enjoyed it. For those that don't have the time to read full biographies of Patton and Rommell, this is the book for you. If you've already read separate biographies of the two, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book.
