Editorial Reviews
Review
"A virtually unknown aspect of Gen. George S. Patton's genius was his flair for photography. IN PATTON'S PHOTOGRAPHS, military historian Kevin Hymel has assembled, written, and produced a visual tour de force that is a splendid tribute to an amazing life. The reader will see Patton as he really lived, experience what he saw, and better understand World War II through his eyes. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in Patton and the war he fought." --Carlo D'Este, author of PATTON: A GENIUS FOR WAR

To understand history, it’s imperative to immerse yourself in the political maneuverings involved. This is why everything has to be researched from multiple perspectives. General Patton knew this, and with his camera slung around his neck, he photographed his excursions and surroundings. He fully knew how history would be influenced by the politically savvy, and had the mindset that a picture would show the truth of what really happened. Getting the story right was everything to the General, and he mentioned this in correspondence that he sent to his wife Beatrice, the depository of his travels. “This will help some future historian to write a less untrue history than usual”. Much has been written about General Patton over the decades, but what impresses me most about this man is his knowledge quest, search for truth, formidable intelligence, and how he spiritually evolved with continuing expanded awareness. World War Two was photographed by professional photographers and was well covered, but in comparison the pictures in this book were taken by an amateur. So, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then what are you trying to tell us, General? To the casual historian, or Patton newbie, probably not much. But to the discerning and knowledgeable historian? A confirmation of facts that have been previously speculative. General Patton took pictures of what we would consider mundane, to photos of those under his command, his side trips of historical significance and ancient temples, and logistics pictures of his tanks and battlefield devastation, or lack of it by his troops, and those troops probably caught hell. There are a couple of very significant pictures of those that the Third Army captured, who Patton interviewed/interrogated, and Allied Commanders and politicians who continued his elucidation, all leading to his classic assessment on page 113. He decided the Allies had fought the wrong enemy. “We have destroyed what could have been a good race and are about to replace them with Mongolian savages”. On page 121, General Eisenhower dismisses Patton as the Commander of the Third Army for his public statements that ran contrary to Eisenhower’s denazification policy. Be a vigilant researcher covering the 20th century and you can decide if General Patton was right or wrong in his assessment. A Notes Section is used for researching the archives and captioning the photos. This book is a good start to the complexity and overwhelming amount of material in the Patton Collection that’s housed in the Library of Congress’s Manuscripts Division. Military historian Kevin Hymel chose, captioned, and articulated the photographs using multiple sources in the Bibliography.

Not sure why these weren't "discovered" until the 1990s since Patton mentions taking photos several times in "War As I Saw It", published forty years earlier. But a remarkable man. Unfortunately he had no particular talent for photography- so the photos are not much to look at, and notable only for who took them.

Disappointed with the format of more writing taking up place where photos could and should of gone. The build up of the book based on the amount of pictures in the archive files and albums was very miss leading! Not worth the money I paid for it. I will still keep it, as it is General Patton. Next time less writing, and more photographs with one sentence narratives would work better. It's about the photos taken by the General, not the author....

Many books have been written on Patton. This book does not try to tell the
whole story,it gives enough information to bring the photos to life.
While I'm not an expert on the late general, there are photos I've never
seen before this book.
The captions give some insight into what Patton may have been thinking
at the time. Some photos show a lighter side,a side many people rarely ever
saw.
You will see photos of the man himself and other famous figures from
the war and the average solder.
The book is an easy read and a good addition to any ones library.

Strongly suspect many of his good photo's are not here, but a must for the Patton admirer's library. Patton is definitely one of the most un- or under-recognized great American hero's of all time; a shining example of a lifetime of perseverance and hard work. Wish there was another picture book wherein the pictures were intimately linked with his many adventures, even if they were not taken by him.

WW-II George Patton who was one of the greatest generals of all time loved photography (Hymel's book tells that story). I was also in Europe during the WW-II bulge period (a 19 year old staff sergeant) and used my camera whenever possible -- therefore, we were both soldiers that snapped photos from-time-to time. I got the feeling from the book that the general probably had better access to film processing developers/fixers than I.
