Patton was champing at the bit to lead the D-Day invasion, but Eisenhower placed him in command of a decoy unit, the First U.S. Army Group. Nearly seven weeks after D-Day, Patton finally got his chance to take Third Army into battle. He began a ten-month rampage across France, driving through Germany and into Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and Austria. Along the way Third Army forces entered the Battle of the Bulge, breaking the siege of Bastogne. It was a turning point in the war, and afterward the Third Army pushed eastward again.

Patton’s Third Army in World War II covers Patton’s command of Third Army with a focus on the armor. It was a new style of fighting, avoiding entrenched infantry warfare by continuously pushing forward, and it appealed to Patton’s hard-charging personality. About the Author

Michael Green is a freelance writer, researcher, and photographer who specializes in military, transportation, and law enforcement subjects with more than ninety books to his credit. In addition, he has written numerous articles for a variety of national and international military-related magazines.

James D. Brown served twenty years in the U.S. Army as an armor officer with a secondary specialty in research and development. His active-duty service includes a four-year tour as an assistant professor of engineering at the United States Military Academy, where he taught combat vehicle design and automotive engineering.

As a student of Third Army History, I eagerly picked up this book. Bought, Shipped and Received in one day, this book chronicles the US Third Army in photographs from it's inception in England in January of 1944 to the End of the War in 1945. As Patton himself put it, no other military element moved as fast, as far, or took as much ground or as many prisoners as the Third Army. The book is interspersed with short Bios of some of the leading commanders of the allied forces during this period and has a host of interesting detailed photos and maps showing the advances of the Third Army. This book is a must have for WWII Historians.

Great photos and Patton info

The photos in this book bring us closer to understanding what World War II for Americans was like. The text is sufficient to describing in a broad way what was happening with Patton's Third Army. But, what I found most fascinating was the Patton quotes scattered throughout the book. You get to understand what Patton (and, presumably the US army) understood about the utilization of such tools of the war as the bazooka, the tank, and the tank destroyer. You get to know what Patton thought of mine fields and how to deal with them, as well as numerous other topics. But mainly, you finally get the idea of Patton's method of war: Speed! With enough speed, you can keep the enemy unbalanced, and you can prevent him from making a good defense. That was Patton's genius, and you can understand that better after reading this book. Sure, this book is about his army. But it is even more about Patton himself.

THis book was excellent because it confirmed a lot of things already known to me as a World War Two veteran, and
soldier in Patton's Third Army, in 1146th Engr. C Group. Book answered many questions I had earlier, because of
the confusion, stress and actions that we withstood during the period identified as "The Battle of The Bulge", which
was the German counter attack against USA in region of Belgium known as "Ardennes Forest". I can now explain in
detail to family members and others what it was like to spend Christmas 1944 during a Winter storm. Also I can
appreciate and be grateful for having lived through this intense, stark adventure without personal injury and even in
good health.
