Blog postA reader pointed out a small typo to me today. On page 285 of The Aubin Academy: Revit Architecture, 2016 and beyond I mixed up “checked” and “unchecked.” Well, this is a small typo, but unfortunately makes the passage quite confusing. Because the difference between checked or unchecked in this context is pretty major. So here is the correction:
My apologies for the error and any confusion it may have caused. And thank you to Anna for pointing it out to me!

Blog postAn often overlooked feature in the Autodesk design suites is the ability to save materials in an external library file. Autodesk material library files have an ADSKLIB extension and can be stored anywhere on your machine or network server. They are easy to create directly in Autodesk authoring applications like Revit, AutoCAD and 3ds Max. Once you have an ADSKLIB file, you can share it with other members of your project team to ensure a consistent palette of materials throughout the project o5 years ago Read more

Blog postSometimes setting up your sheets in a Revit project can be a real chore. Do you know which views are already on sheets somewhere in your set? Is your sheets browser branch organized in the best way to display and locate the sheets you need? Are your viewport titles located where and how you like them? Addressing these issues is simpler than you think.
Is my view on a sheet? Let’s start with the views in your browser. How do you know if they are already on a sheet somewhere in the set?5 years ago Read more -
Blog postI have been creating a lot of Revit Family Content lately. I just discovered an odd little item. Not sure there is a practical application, but I thought I would post it here anyhow. So when you want to label a dimension, (to apply a parameter) you have to make sure that the dimension only has two witness lines – in other words, a single dimension, not a multiple string. Well, that is the standard conventional wisdom. Turns out you can label a multi-segment dimension… but again, I am not sure5 years ago Read more

Blog postHave you heard about Project Soane? Project Soane is a Worldwide effort to recreate Sir John Soane’s lost work at the Bank of England in London. Back in the early 1800’s Sir John Soane was the Architect for the Bank of England and created many of his most famous and respected works there.
Sadly however, much of his work has been lost to future renovations at the bank. However, a vast archive of Soane’s original drawings survive at the John Soane Museum. Project Soane is an effort6 years ago Read more -
Blog postI just discovered a new and unwelcome “feature” of Revit. I thought is was 2016. Because I had not noticed it till now. But apparently this little item snuck in all the back in Revit 2014! How did I not notice before. Well, regardless, here are the details:
In previous releases (2013 and prior to be specific), if you have a schedule that itemizes all instances (ungrouped), when you edit a type property, you would receive an alert that the change would apply to all instances. You would6 years ago Read more -
Blog postA reader recently asked:
“I have been eyeing your book Renaissance Revit. With the release of Revit 2016, is there anything in this release that makes the current version of your book out of date?”
I thought this was a terrific question. So here is the answer. There is nothing in Revit 2015 or 2016 that invalidates anything I have written in the book. However, there are a couple new features in the family editor that would have been “nice to have”.

Revit Essentials for Architecture combines a straightforward, reader-friendly style with detailed project-focused exercises that encourage you to learn by doing. Readers will gain practical, firsthand experience with the powerful and popular Autodesk® Revit® software; purpose-built for Building Information Modeling (BIM), which industry leading architects and building design professionals are using to move beyond traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) and drafting to manage complex projects, foster collaboration and boost productivity. With tools for early schematic design and planning, detailed design development studies and tools to create complete sets of deliverables including traditional construction document sets and modern digital output, Revit offers the modern architect everything they need to be successful in today's competitive market. Within these pages you will find a concise manual focused squarely on the rationale and practicality of creating architectural projects within the BIM paradigm. The emphasis is on proven best-practice procedures rather than a series of independent commands and tools. The goal of each lesson is to help readers complete building design projects successfully. You will find equal emphasis on "why" individual tools and features are used, not just "how" to perform the picks and clicks. The text and exercises seek to give the reader a clear sense of the value of the tools, while remaining focused on practical examples from architectural practice. Revit Essentials for Architecture provides resources designed to shorten your learning curve, raise your comfort level, and, most importantly, give you real-life, tested, and practical advice on the usage of the software to create architectural Building Information Models.
Features:
• Thorough coverage of the essential skills required to use Revit for Architecture.
• Includes coverage of modeling tools, setting up views, composing sheets, working with design options, linked files, and team collaboration with worksharing.
• The author combines his extensive experience as an educator and architectural professional with a straightforward, engaging writing style, making even complex material easier for readers to master and apply to real projects.
• Practical, project-focused exercises encourage readers to "learn by doing," giving a deeper understanding of the BIM process and the tools and techniques used to practice it.
• BIM Manager tips throughout the text offer readers practical insights on what is required to manage building information modeling in a modern architectural setting.
• Dataset and practice files are included and available for download from the author's website.
• Files are provided for each chapter, so you can skip to just the topics you need or follow the lessons from start to finish. Check your progress by comparing your results to the completed versions provided.
• Use the book with Autodesk® Revit®, or Autodesk® Revit® LT software.

Leverage the power of the Revit family editor to create complex forms drawn from classical architecture. This book brings together three of the author’s favorite things: architecture, history and Revit in a hands-on manual like nothing else available!
From the Foreword
“Paul Aubin has carved out a distinctive niche in the overlapping worlds of BIM, Revit & Education. He offers support to self-directed learners who have caught the BIM bug and are seeking greater fluency & deeper knowledge. To a large extent I think his success is rooted in his own eagerness to explore and learn; plus his ability to share that enthusiasm with others. In this book he has taken that approach to a new level, seizing on one of his long-term interests, embarking on a journey of discovery, and sharing the results with his audience…And there is no better way to deepen your insight than to build your own versions of the classical orders using a programme like Revit.
I think Paul has hit upon an explosive combination. Let him draw you in and take you on two rides for the price of one. Let the synergy generated by the disparate worlds of software & history drive your learning experience forward. You may well find that, like a child, you learn new skills and knowledge in an effortless riot of exploratory play…So buy the book, make the journey and take your BIM pencil for a walk across the virtual pages of history.”
