Review

Over the past couple of decades, those in the know have witnessed the appeal of retro electronic musical modeling and classic video game soundtracking take off in such a way so as to begin in the past few years to have an effect on the perpetually lumbering mainstream, delivering the love of esoteric kitsch out of the basement preserves of obsessive knob twiddlers and circuit benders and straight to the likes of major name acts such as Beck and The Postal Service. With a host of different chiptune composers, bit pop arrangers, and more traditional "bands" (such as Phoenix, AZ's The Mini Bosses) keeping the flame alive, it's virtually assured that the nostalgic strains of all that classic 8-bit and 16-bit video game scoring that was (and is) such music to the ears of many of us over the age of 35 will be kept alive well into the disposable confines of an Instagrammed future. Carpe diem, kiddos.

Taking in hand this sustained fascination with retrotronica, 010101 Music's new (and initial) release Paula Agnus Denise: The Best of Amiga and CD32 Video Game Music utilizes a large and differentiated roster of artists and vantage points to funnel forth new envisionings of the otherwise forgotten musical accompaniment to many of your favorite Amiga and CD32 video games from the late 1980's and early 1990's. Perhaps as a continuing sign of the times, Paula Agnus Denise (named such for the set of chips used primarily in the Amiga system) delivers steady currents of classic video game revivalism, bitpop and chiptune circuit wizardry, and the generally evergreen appeal of all things dated. Swelling the ranks of this dj and composer-laden outing, musical scores from Amiga classics such as Battle Squadron to Hired Guns to Shadow of the Beast are worked over, rearranged, and remixed in such a way so as to amply re-envision the contents while most always keeping a handle on the feel of the original. As such, much of the contents of Paula Agnus Denise sound much closer to homage than total recapping, and many seemingly stay fairly true to form with the blips and contours of the originals, often adding what could be described as a classic electro feel ala Krautrock pioneers such as Kraftwerk and Neu!

Danceable tangents blend with the backwards glances, reminding us of the indebtedness modern electro and techno owe to their progenitors in other arenas of sound, such as with CoLD SToRAGE's takes on various tracks from the Shadow of the Beast series or the remakes of various aspects of the 1990 Amiga run-and-gun series Turrican. Still others bring different feels to the material, such as with Synchaoz's retake of "Narcissus" from the Amiga Cannon Fodder series, which generally holds the 16-bit line yet introduces some soaring rock guitars to mix, Allister Brimble's hyper-space disco version of "Project-X", or Danja and Martine's delicate, chamber-inflected take on "Agony Title (Acoustic Jam)", the title music from the Amiga game Agony. What one finds all across Paula Agnus Denise is a pleasantly nostalgic reimagining of these classic cuts that isn't too filtered through the lenses of modern electro bias, instead allowing the somewhat quaint yet imaginatively complex outlines of the originals come to the forefront. Paula Agnus Denise might not be for everyone, and those with a soft spot for the plethora of classic video game music that littered our young adulthood are apt to get more out of this one (this reviewer counts himself in that camp). That being said, the record has a little something for more than simply the electro-geek crowd, and if anything, will hopefully introduce an ever-widening audience to these gems from the mines.
