We recently ordered this steamer and were pleasantly surprised at how well constructed it was and how well it works. Both the pot and steamer insert are heavier weight than comparable steamers, and appear to be as durable as they are attractive. The copper bottom heats up quickly and evenly, and the knob on the lid does not get too hot to handle. It can steam enough vegetables for 3-4 people. Make sure you read the label and soak the copper bottom 20 min. in baking soda solution before use to remove its protective coating.

Update:

Warning: Using this pot on a commercial-style gas stove causes the plastic handles to char - even on relatively small burners.

This pot is very good quality, easy to wash, easy to handle, and doesn't take up much space in the cabinet. It is the perfect size for steaming everything from sweet potatoes to broccoli for 1 to 4 people. I had a really hard time finding a steamer pot with insert that was smaller than 8 quarts in kitchen stores and big box stores, so this was 100% worth it.

I just wanted to share that this is a wonderful thing. It's well designed, easy to use and clean, and the quality exceeds the price. This is a perfect steamer for a single person or a smaller family.

I love this little steamer. Very well constructed and is easy to wipe clean. It is small but works great if cooking for 1-2 people. I use it almost everyday to steam vegetables! I originally purchased an electronic plastic steamer, but sent it back and purchased this instead (I feel so much more safer cooking foods in stainless steel cookware than heating it in a plastic container). One of the best pieces of cookware I ever purchased. Great for quickly cooking up corn on the cobb, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc.

My old steamer--25 years old or more--had lost its stainless steal coating and had become a sad-looking, mottled, banged-up lump of aluminum. Time for something new! This Paula Deen steamer is a wonderful piece of cookware. It has a large capacity steamer basket for vegetables and cooks them perfectly. I appreciate the see-through glass lid, which lets me check on the progress of my cooking without having to lift the lid and wind up with a blast of hot steam in my face. I am glad that I made this purchase.

I purchased the Paula Deen steamer as a replacement for a Cuisinart steamer so I'll be comparing it to that. Overall, the PD unit is pretty well made. It's lightweight, but not thin walled. The steamer fits very snug to the pot and does an admirable job letting condensed water seep through the holes. I thought it did a better job of this then the Cuisinart unit. This is probably due to the slightly larger steamer holes in this unit.

What I love most about this steamer is the rubber like wrapping of the handles and lid. This keeps both the steamer and the lid cool enough to handle even when the pot has been boiling for a long time. The Cuisinart did not have this and it's definitely a plus! What's also better in the PD steamer is its resistance to staining; cleaning up is pretty easy.

What I don't like is what keeps this unit from getting 5 stars; the design of the base. The base has a concave design, that is it's flat on the outside, but the metal depresses in towards the middle. Why is that a problem? Because this means the bottom doesn't get full contact with the ceramic stovetop that I use which means I spend more time waiting for water to boil, alot more time then the Cuisinart. The PD unit has a copper plated bottom, which should mean a faster and more efficient heat transfer, but there's just not enough of the metal to make contact. If you're using a gas stove, then this is irrelevant. I'm guessing it was designed this way to save money by cutting material costs, but it will end up costing me more in the long run with a higher electric bill. I would have gladly paid $5 more if the bottom were flat.

Overall I am happy with the purchase and would buy it again if I had to.

I usually find "celebrity chefs" a huge turnoff, and I suspect that the "PD" initials on the lid added to the price of the steamer, yet I'm still happy that I bought it. This steamer is high quality stainless steel and is well constructed. I followed the manufacturer's instruction regarding use and cleaning, and the steamer performs beautifully. The 3 quart size is perfect for steaming one or two servings. This is a hefty little set and the quality is such that I expect that it will last a lifetime. Other reviewers have commented on the inability to see the water level, but it is my feeling that cooks with experience will quickly learn how much water to add that will be sufficient for their cooking needs.

I am not one to write reviews, though I seriously read and value the reviews posted prior to making a purchase- but in tis case, there was NO way I could ignore this and let other people make the same mistake I did. I bought this steamer to steam yams, squash etc. for my 15 month old. It was not cheap and I assumed Paula Dean would have good cooking utensils. I followed the instructions and soaked the pot prior to the first use. The first time I used it I noticed a really strong toxic smell in my kitchen- it took me a while to figure out where it was coming from- then I realized the smell was coming from the plastic handles on the pot. I didn't pay too much attention to it and thought maybe it was because it was the first time using it. About 3 days later I tried using it again- same issue the second time. This time I turned the fire down to simmer (which kind of defeats the purpose of the steamer) and I even wrapped the handles tightly in foil- still no luck. My entire house smelled of extremely toxic plastic and chemical fumes. I had to open every single window In the house and blast fans in my baby's room because the disgusting smell had crept upstairs to all the bedrooms!! Needless to say, I was planning on never using this terrible toxic pot in my house again and was upset that I threw the box out which meant I probably couldn't return it. Sure enough, I just got home and my poor nanny decided to steam some yams for my baby and encountered the same issue. Unfortunately she didn't think of wrapping the handles with foil and now my ENTIRE house absolutely REEKS of burnt toxic plastic- so much so that both my husband and my throats are really hurting us.Read more ›
