Written with sharp humor, and huge personality, Paula Takes A Risk is the hilarious story about the metamorphosis of Paula Tenenbaum, who naively enters into an adventure that changes her life. This is a story certain to strike a chord in anyone who secretly desires change, but is afraid to make it.

About the author

Randi M Sherman is the award winning author of humorous fiction books.
With an eye for detail, an ear for well-tuned dialogue and an incredible grasp of the obvious, all honed while performing stand-up comedy in Los Angeles and improvisational theater in San Francisco, Sherman adds just enough bawdiness to deliver character-driven contemporary novels that will have the reader laughing, thinking and connecting with the characters in her books.
Randi lives in California's wine country, finds a reason to laugh everyday and doesn't take herself too seriously. Risk and change are two of Randi's favorite things in addition to carbohydrates, sugar and a great cocktail.

Paula Takes A Risk is an enjoyable and quick read. At times hilarious and at times a tearjerker, this is a great book to take on the airplane with you or throw in your bag to take to the beach. It follows the boring and mundane existence of the not very adventurous or exciting Paula Tenenbaum. Paula thought she had life under control. She had a job she felt was secure and a boyfriend she thought might marry her. But then the bottom fell out of Paula's formerly stable world. One inconspicuous day, she first lost her job; and then her boyfriend broke up with her. This set Paula into a spiral of depression from which it seemed there was no escape.
Enter Larry--Paula's sleazy, irresponsible and conniving neighbor. Larry has a new "scheme" up his sleeve, and he figures he can use Paula to help him pull it off. Although Paula is hesitant to get involved, she ends up getting caught up in Larry's excitement and is drawn into Larry's web. After a period of time "living the high life" playing the part of a persona completely new and unfamiliar to her, Paula discovers that she really has become the character she has been portraying herself to be. Through this experience, Paula has become much more self confident, flashy and, generally speaking, just a more exciting person to be around.
Just as Paula accepts Larry for the scumbag he really is, and gets ready to branch off on her own putting her new-found self confidence to better use; the inevitable happens, and their scheme is exposed and quickly unravels. What will become of these two now? Will Paula be able to find a new niche in life, on her own? You won't want to put down this book until you find out what is to happen to our loveable, completely fallible heroine.
On the same day, Paula Tenenbaum loses her job and is dumped by her boyfriend. She is accused of being average and boring on both counts. Depressed her lackluster life has lost even more shine, the heroine realizes she needs to make change happen and fast.
Before she can decide what exactly to do with her life, Larry, her conniving neighbor, takes advantage of her fragile state and takes her life in a completely different, and not boring, direction.
Fast-paced from the get-go, Paula Takes a Risk is a quick read packed with details that resurface throughout the story, which means no skimming allowed for this story. With the natural humor in the story and dialog, Sherman is a witty writer who knows how to keep a story moving.
Though a story about a woman who has had her life fall apart and wants more excitement, the book quickly veers from the obvious. I found myself continuously surprised and never knowing just what to expect throughout the story. It is always fun to find yourself surprised, even if you do not always like the outcome.
The filled with plenty of unlikeable characters, you can still relate to the main character from the beginning. She is content, but not happy. Then she is miserable and confused. Even when I was frustrated with the decisions she made, I could still understand her point of view: she is someone who has been beaten and will do whatever it takes to put together some resemblance of an existence.
With more and more people in our generation having to settle or knowing what it is like to be scorned by someone you trust (or don't completely trust), Paula Takes a Risk is a great read for anyone looking for a distraction from their own life.

Paula's dynamic change in this story is amazing. She goes from living dull to taking a chance, thanks to her neighbor. Though Larry is a bit on the shady side, and not completely trustworthy, the two as a pair makes for quite an interesting story.
Paula Takes a Risk is a witty novel that keeps the flow upbeat and fun. It was a easy read and one that I enjoyed. Are you willing to take a risk on this book? If Paula can take one, anyone can!
