I was on the medieval-encampmets e-list when John was writing this and every time he finished a chapter, he'd post it on his website to share with all of us. We had people from worldwide reenactment societies on that and similar lists and John's advice and opinions were very respected.

Editorial Reviews
Review
The Pavilion Book lives up to its claim -- a guide to buying, maintaining, and living in a medieval-style tent. It should also be noted that it has good advice on making your own tent... The Pavilion Book offers good, clear guidance and answers to all your tent questions. The author does a good job of detailing the types of tents that are available and accepted as society-period, and goes into every detail of types of cloth, construction methods, and support materials... Whether you are just considering buying or building a tent, or you have years of experience, you will find that this book is one that will save you from uncertainty at the least, and likely will save you time and money. Then you can turn your thoughts to more serious matters, such as what colors to decorate the interior of your new pavilion. --Tournaments Illuminated #165
The Pavilion Book is insightful, fairly easy to read, informative, and at times amusing ...From reading the text it is evident that the author fully understands his art. --Pennsic Independent

A disclaimer: the book's author is a personal aquaintance in the SCA, where I know him as Johann - the soft-spoken and gracious guy who has a great period encampment and hosts Brewer's Guild tastings.
If you, like me, are trying to research and compare/contrast buying a pavilion vs. making one -- this is the ultimate resource. It is also a good read, even an intentionally amusing one at times. Compared to the cost of mistakes in the process and implementation of constructing or purchasing a period home, the book's price is nominal. It belongs on the shelf of every medieval reconstructionist who owns or aspires to own a pavilion, and it's also a handy reference on care and cleaning for anyone who for any reason owns a canvas tent.

This is a must have for anyone involved with the SCA, or any related living history groups that involve living in canvas tents and pavilions.
This is the extended "care and feeding" guide for making your pavilion live a long and happy life. It also details how to make a tent from scratch if that is your goal. It also includes the recipe for making a Dragonwing style dayshade.
It is a humble guide, written to be accessible by anyone.

A good book for historical re-enactors that have canvas pavillions. It is the nuts and bolts of maintaining a canvas tent.

The info in this book is fantastic.
Easy layout lets you get to the info you want fast, and the info is presented in a relaxed and funny way while still being informative.
While there isn't a set of plans to make your own pavilion from, this is a good thing for it makes you design a pavilion that suits your needs, and not a one-size-fits-all pavilion.

I purchased this book (Kindle edition), and returned it the same day. This book has great information, however all of the images, which the book refers to, are all missing. Found most of the same information at Panther Primitives online catalog, or on the Dragonwing website columns (for the "BC" Sunshade.)

good account on every possible aspect - from a US point of view of course. could have been more explicit with plans in the do-it-yourself section.
the market is small and whatever else is there probably is out of print since long so this has a bit of an exclusive status too.
