Academy Award(R) winner Forest Whitaker and Golden Globe(R) winner Michael Chiklis reunite for the first time since "The Shield" for the most gripping crime thriller of the year: An all-night diner. A cop walks in on a robbery in progress. But what happens next - and what happened just before - will change everything you think you know. Now the building is surrounded. There are fingers on every trigger. And one very intense hostage situation is about to take some extremely shocking twists. Common, Stephen Lang, Nikki Reed, Jessica Szohr and Ray Liotta co-star in this shotgun blast of a drama about last chances, double-crosses and a deadly game of dirty deals where anyone can be a PAWN.

The beginning was forced, hypothetical, within a hypothetical, which serves no purpose in the story AT ALL....Since they clear it up 5 minutes later.
Then you have the end scene with all of the strings hanging, the RUSHED ending at that.
The mediocre acting by the Tom Cruise Look-a-like (Yes, he gets paid as one) whose lines were structured, forced, to make him appear guilty, but the cops do not think he is.....
It was poorly written, poorly acted and pretty clear why it was the proverbial "STV" video, even though it has High -B and Low-A actors present. No, if someone found this 5 or 4 star worthy, they I have to say their comprehension of good and bad "Productions" are horribly askew
One example of a great film which exemplifies all the elements that this one got wrong- would be "The Negotiator" (1998). I wanted to love "Pawn"- I really tried, but the more I watched it, the more irrational and unbelievable the characters acted, and the weaker the story got- right up until the anti-climax...
Some folks actually do like dark films like this, however, which strive to leave one feeling angry or slightly disturbed as the credits roll, and if that is you- you'll find this one to be collectable, like "Closure" or "Prisoners"- but unlike those films, ya gotta admit after watching this one, it only gets a "B-" at best.
Worth a watch or two.
