Love the beginning poem called Hell! It really says what and how, just about every living soul in this world feels and thinks. It is by J. H. Stevenson 1890 and very heavy words for even back then. If only Joaquin had read it before she decided to sell her soul to the devil. Thinking it would help at home and bring her and her Mother back together again. As they say, you better watch what you ask for. Yes the devil did as agreed upon, but at what extra cost to Jax?
Trying to get back as much as possible of her soul so she can get into heaven, Jax volunteers at a women's shelter a few days a week and she is a bartender at night. Her little friend from down the street, Tommy, sometimes go to the shelter with her and helps her out. Jax has been kinda looking after Tommy for a few years now. He has become her friend and a little brother to her. Jax doesn't let anybody into her life and heart, so Tommy is special. Wait till she finds out just how special Tommy really is.
This story all takes place in Baltimore MD and its suburbs. It has turned into a very rough area. Full of demons out to do no good to the people who live there. Jax has found that she can spot a demon very easy and has been fighting them off for a while now. To keep fit, she goes to a Boxing gym to work out and it helps to squelch the voices of the demons in her head. She has earned the respect of the guys who work out there and fight in the ring. One day a new face comes in and she is at a loss for words. He was gorgeous, hot body, sculptured face and more. She had an instant attraction to him and he to her. His name is Dane and he is a PI, looking for a missing women.
Well Jax seems to keep running into him and now has to ask why? They hit if off and take it from there very slowly, as Jax hasn't been in a relationship for a while. Skipping ahead some, she finds out that Dane is a sin eater and she is really a Elioud, a child of Nephilim. Elioud are children of Angels and daughters of man. Because of this, Jax is put in the middle of good and evil. It's fight for the good side or be thrown to the devil and believe me, he is waiting for her. Can she work with and for the angels? Can this help her into heaven? And what about Dan? They seem not to like him, but he is determined to stick by her side no matter what. He wants to fight with her and he wants to be with her in many ways.
The story gets better and better as you go along. Action, love, demons and angels make for a good read. I laughed, I cried towards the end and hanging on to the edge of your seat. Will Jax pay off her debt with the devil with her death? Or will she end up his queen and live as a demon slave? So much happens and loads of surprises. Even though I read this book before, I still couldn't put it down for wanting more of the story. It was like reading it for the first time all over again, it's that good!
I can't wait to see what happens as this story unfolds.
When Jax is 17 she does what she thinks it right in order to save her mother - and now the devil owns her soul. Jax spends the next 5 years trying to redeem the mistake she made by way of good deeds and volunteering until one day the world as she knows it crumbles down around her feet. Her friend Tommy, the appearance of Dane, and the mind-bending reality of Jax's new world are almost too much to bear. Especially when the Devil is breathing down her neck and beckoning her home.
Welcome to Jax's new life - until the Devil comes to collect!
Payable On Death is an engaging, action packed urban fantasy novel. Jax is a strong, independent woman that has learned to take care of herself. She is no-nonsense and kick ass. Her guardian angel is a secret keeper and has earned no gold stars from Jax when she learns the truth. She's also thrust into the arms of Dane, a sin eater.
Some of the book seems rushed and there are areas where topic shifts are abrupt and uncomfortable. I realize that this is the first book and there is a lot of world building and character development that goes on to get readers up to speed. The author's world, while tumultuous, is crafted pretty well despite some of the hiccups. I found myself not wanting to put the book down, very interested in what Jax and Dane were going to become involved in next.
I liked the book for the most part. I was on the edge of my seat through many of the action scenes, including near the end. I look forward to the next book in the series and am excited to see where Jax and the Devil tangle with each other next. Many reviewers have likened this book to Constantine and there are many similarities; however, the author does include a lot more original content. Don't let the resemblance dissuade you from checking out Payable On Death. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable Rachel Rawlings' angels vs demons storyline is in this new adult urban fantasy novel.

This book is really good. The character development starts out fast in the background but then takes a while to go into detail about her current abilities. If you like stories about Angels and Demons, then this is a great book. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys paranormal stories. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I’m giving this book 4 hearts
