PAYING BACK THE DEAD has a nice mystery within its pages. Kudos to Ms. Marsh for using an unusual murder weapon. The clues and suspects are revealed in a logical manner, but I came away feeling like the murderer came out of nowhere. The story moves along at a steady pace. The characters are better developed than in COOKING WITH THE DEAD, especially Laura. Laura appears to have grown a backbone this time around, and it is nice to see her stick up for herself, although now it seems she is always tired and easily angered instead of feeling faint. Howard is a nice foil for Laura, and I am glad that their relationship progresses here. My favorite character is Laura’s cat Monty. You cannot help but love a cat who can talk to his person.
My problem with this book is mostly with the editing. One character is addressed by three different first names, two on the same page even, and that is distracting. There are also discrepancies with the murder weapon’s description. Yes, these are relatively small details, but, for me, the details make or break the book, and these kept me from loving this tale.
Being in a hotel provides plenty opportunity for temporary characters to put in appearances, in this case, a movie star, and her friend, the corporate head of a bicycle manufacturing firm, who has moved to Millerfield to pursue his hobby: biking.
But, log and behold, who should end up dead but the husband of her cousin, the tax man. Laura meets and befriends her cousin and starts to feel responsible for solving the murder. It seems the victim was not a nice man and there are plenty of potential suspects, including her cousin, Judy.
Of course, Howard as the town's doctor, is called in to assist and he and Laura are drawn into the investigation. The romance between Laura and Howard is heating up and Marsh has started handling it a little more subtly, which solves a major criticism of the previous books. Monty, the telepathic cat, keeps the home fires burning for Laura, and provides a major clue in solving this crime.
Carrie Marsh is definitely growing as an author, and quickly, too. I recommend this series. These books are a quick, fun read, and so far we've lost no one we really like.
I received this product in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Laura and her doctor boyfriend, Howard, fancy themselves amateur detectives and set out to solve the murder of a local tax man. In the course of their investigations, they discover that the victim was married to a cousin of Laura's who she has not seen in decades. Laura is concerned that her cousin Judy will be under suspicion so she sets out to clear her name and to find the real culprit.
I found myself comparing Laura to Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote fame.. only younger and with a British flair. She and Howard work alongside the local police but not with them per se. Laura has amusing "conversations" with her cat Monty which add a bit of humor to the book.
The book is a quick read and I would like to read future offerings by this author.
Ms. Marsh does a great job of spinning the story so that keeps you guessing who is the killer till close to the end. Of course you still see the dialogue between Laura and her cat, Monty. Even though this book is part of a series each book can be read as a stand-alone and in any order without feeling like you are missing something.
The story is as the title states – a cozy mystery – it is not a strong suspenseful high dynamic book. It is a light read with some mystery and suspense with a touch of light romance throughout. This is a good change of pace book if you normally read a heavier or darker read. I enjoyed the change as sometimes you just need to read a good quick suspense with some humor that you do not have to put a ton of thought into.
Overall this book was a unique and fun book. If you want a book that is a light read with some mystery, then this is the book for you.
