Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the hotly-tipped singer/songwriter. There is a common reaction when people first hear Carolyn Wonderland, which is best summed up by the LA Times quote: ''She's ... more the real deal. Sure, there are lots of other pretty faces out there who can sing, and maybe they can even play a few leads on the guitar. But once you witness the raw emotional power and originality of Carolyn's vocals and guitar playing, you are left stunned.

I first saw Carolyn at Antone's in Austin about four years ago. It was absolutley awesome. One of the best blues reviews I've ever seen. Words can't describe it. I had seen her on other occassions there, and her Christmas show there was the greatest. I got the opportunity to sit and chat with her after the show and the crowd had thinned. What an amazing, individual. Such a sweet, personalbe and humble a person for the power house entertainer she is. I can truly say that I love this woman to death and I never miss any opportunity I get to see her. If you haven't seen her, you must. Ya, Janis and Bonnie all rolled into one. I simply can't say enough.

Man, this album was three years in the making and well worth it! Ray Benson (9-time Grammy Winner) has done it again producing this magical CD full of surreal vocals, killer guitar riffs, supreme bass/key riffs and rock-solid drumming. A must have for any true blues fan...Think of Bonnie Raitt + Janis Joplin +Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Don't let the cheesy title keep you away. Peace Meal is a wonderful blues rock album in which all of the band members shine. Still it's Ms. Wonderland's voice and guitar chops that bring the songs to another level. As such a powerful force, it is only natural for her to open the album with a cover of Janis Joplin's "What Good Can Drinkin' Do". However, her own songs such as "Only God Knows When" (with great boogie piano by Cole El-Saleh) and "Usurper" are also highlights. She closes the album with a gentle, mandolin-driven tune that showcases the control and versatility of her mighty voice. Highly recommended.

This is my first exposure to Carolyn Wonderland, and I'm happy to say I am delighted (just gets better with repeated listening), and look forward to exploring more of her music.

At first I worried she would sound too much like a "Janice, or Bonnie Raitt or Susan Tedeschi", but she doesn't. She is distinct enough for a Texas blues singer/guitarist, and that's saying a lot. Her song selection is fine (half originals, and half covers), and she has a great voice - strong, expressive, but also with plenty of dynamic range. Production and backup musicianship is top-notch, and Carolyn plays a mean electric guitar.... She is firmly grounded in the blues, but her voice also reminds me at times of jazzy R&B - old (Etta James crossed with Aretha) and new (Joss Stone). Her overall sound with its wide range of styles also reminds me of bands far outside the blues mainstream (such as The Radiators and Little Feat).

This is really good stuff - not revolutionary, but not tired and predictable either.

I am an old school blues lover, Big Mama Thornton, Bessie Smith, Etta, Koko and of coarse, Janis are some of my idols. Someone recommended I check out Carolyn Wonderland and I bought this CD. There is no disputing that Miss Wonderland is a talented vocalist, however, she brings in a bit more country influence to her music than I usually like. She has a big, gritty voice that she puts out there full power but might benefit from a bit more nuance. But her cover of Janis Joplin's "What Good Does Drinkin' Do" is a hard-edged, in your face rendition of a song I've heard a thousand times but to her credit, it almost came across as new to my ears.

I enjoyed this CD but am undecided as to whether or not I'll buy more of her music. That said, she is very talented performer and deserves to be recognized as such.

I had first heard Carolyn on the "Blues Guitar Women" CD. This one is all Carolyn, and she starts blowing your ears off with a Janis Joplin tune, "What Good Can Drinkin' Do". She has a awesome deep voice and compliments it with a solid . powerful guitar. She wrote some of the songs, all of which are great, but it's her guitar that comes through the best. If you like great blues rhythm , strong sounding guitar then I'd recommend giving Carolyn a spin.

I love this album. It's got one of the best blues songs I've heard in a long, long time on it. "I Can Tell" is just a smokin' song that you'll be crankin' up to volume#10 on your player every time you listen to it! Even better, go to Youtube and upload Carolyn's live version from her performance "Live at Antones". It's 2 minutes longer than the recorded version on "Peace Meal" and so much better( if you can believe that ). It'll send chills up your spine when you watch and listen to this video of it. Probably, as good as Humble Pie's live recording of Ashford and Simpsons, "I Don't Need No Doctor" from Humble Pie's performance "Rockin'The Fillmore"( 40 yrs. ago!!! ) Can't wait to see Carolyn tomorrow night at "The Narrows in Fall River,Ma. Got my fingers crossed hoping for an interview also. Paul from "TalknRoll"

She is an amazing singer,a rocking good guitar player, writes a mean melody and has a social awareness that comes through her amazing lyrics. You will want to dance right from the first track and then you will think. One of those cd's you will play over and over and it still wont be enough.
