Editorial Reviews

Now, you know that the times had definitely a-changed when the High Priest of All Things Square, Mitch Miller, recorded a peace album in 1970! This is a long ways away from the sing-along albums of the Golden Decade...or is it? Yes, the repertoire is changed, but the formula 25 male voices, top-flight musicians like Al Caiola and Dick Hyman remains largely unchanged. In short, this is your father s peace album, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

A peace sing-along by Mitch and Gang? Why not. It's one Mitch Miller & Gang album I'd prefer any day to his usual recordings. Same as I prefer the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Smile albums to their usual stuff likewise. But with Mitch and his Gang here they recorded an album that fitted with its time(1970). This one was just a year after John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band put out the anthem "Give Peace A Chance", which closes this album. I first heard this version after I purchased Golden Throats 2 on cassette[It was also the closing track there]. I could hardly believe it. As most people know, Miller was an A & R man at Columbia Records back in the '50s which was where he recorded his greatest work. Then enter the '60s when Bob Dylan was signed to the label as well as Pete Seeger by John Hammond, Sr.. The choice of Dylan featured here[and probably the most popular Dylan cover of all time]is "Blowin' In The Wind". Judging by this rendition it's based on the Peter, Paul & Mary arrangement. Speaking of PP&M, this brings us to the subject of Pete Seeger, whom most of the selections on this effort were taken from whether Seeger entirely written or co-written or just adapted as his own. "If I Had A Hammer"[The most popular Seeger song of all time and was also on the front page of the first issue of Sing Out! magazine] was what got PP&M onto the early '60s folk boom and I first heard this briefly in the Weavers' Wasn't That A Time documentary. Other Seeger associated tunes featured here are "Turn! Turn! Turn!(To Everything There Is A Season)"[Seeger's only top 40 hit before being taken to the top of the charts by The Byrds]; "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"[Also done by PP&M];"We Shall Overcome" and "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream".Read more ›
