*I am editing this review to add video on how to play. And update as we really love this game. Super easy and fun.
The concept is simple. Get 40! baby chicks back to the coop!
It involves counting and small preK strategy. My son is 3.5 yrs old. He is just getting heavy into board games. He could play them all day. His current favorite is HiHo CherryO. This sort of reminds me of that. It is pretty quick play. Short enough to keep my 3yr olds attention and fun enough he wants to play 2 or 3 times before he calls quits. Fun game!
Get all 40 chicks back to the coop before the momma hen gets back to the coop.
In the Box:
Everything is so solid and quality made. Very smooth and nice. My only worry is that I fear we may lose some chicks. But so far so good.
Hopefully the video shows how quality this game is made. I am definitely looking to buy more from Peaceable Kingdom. My son just started preK and these games are perfect for them.
The premise of the game is simple. Spin the wheel and move the mama hen along the board. Every space you travel, you get to put one chick back in the house (5 spaces, 5 chicks). Try to get all the chicks back before mama hen reaches the hen house. Roll the fox and you have to take one out.
We "win" almost every time, which the three year old likes. And, she's practicing counting, which I like. She loves having a board game, just like her older sister (who has several). But, unlike older sisters games - she can do this one without being on a "team" with Mom or Dad. And, her big sister doesn't always win, since it's a cooperative game.
This is a great game for early counters. I'd say 2-4 is the right range. My 5 year old likes to play it with her little sister. But, when the little one is down for a nap, she generally wants to move on to other, harder games.
We are constantly fighting the battle of not losing the little chicks (and seeds in Seeds for the Birds). But, Peaceable Kingdom offers free replacement pieces. So, if they ever do disappear, it's not too big of a deal.
Broke the spinner and emailed the company - who sent a replacement very quickly. That was very much appreciated.
The pieces are all VERY high-quality and more durable than typical board games, it was just abused by a curious and busy toddler. I was surprised how long it stood up to toddler abuse.
Will be looking for more games by the same company in the future.
