Review
Peacebunny Island is an absolutely delightful and deeply insightful book. Caleb Smith writes with the optimism and authenticity of the young man he is and with the hard-earned wisdom and insight of the old soul that lies within. If you find yourself in need of comfort―or of a reminder of the good that still exists in this world―the precious bunnies of Peacebunny Island stand ready to hop into your heart and fill your soul with peace. Jennifer Marshall Bleakley, Author of Joey and Pawverbs
Peacebunny Island is a heartwarming story that will encourage your soul. Enjoy the improbable tale of a young boy parlaying his love for rescued rabbits to make a real difference. I love the sweet reminder of how God uses the childlike faith of Caleb Smith to accomplish His purpose. Dave Burchett, Author of Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me about Life, Loss, and Grace
Caleb’s skill at describing his experience after the tragedy at Sandy Hook is such a beautiful tribute to the gift of presence that was provided to the Newtown community and especially to me. Our emotional response to the story tells us that he captured the essence through his observations and reflections. The clarity of language, precise word choice, and heartfelt honesty come shining through! Dr. Anthony J. Salvatore, Retired public school administrator of Newtown Public Schools in Connecticut
You don’t need to be an animal lover to fall in love with this tale of one boy’s dream of rescuing rabbits, training them as comfort animals, and then buying them their very own island. Encouraged by parents who met his dreams with a healthy balance of support and reality-checking, Caleb is a relatable hero whose youthful wisdom applies to anyone with an entrepreneur’s spirit. I read this book in two days simply because it is a delight and I could not stop. If your soul, like mine, could stand a good dousing of sheer joy, read this book. And if you need a little inspiration to follow your own dreams, pandemic and beyond, look no further. You’ve arrived. September Vaudrey, Author of Colors of Goodbye
Deeply moving, inspiring, and profoundly hopeful, the story of Peacebunny Island is an inspiring reminder that we can all make the world better for the people (and animals) around us. Highly recommended. Matt Mikalatos, Author of The Sunlit Lands trilogy
In Peacebunny Island, Caleb Smith walks us through his journey of fulfilling his dream with business savvy and prayer. Readers of this book will be inspired to persevere, trusting God’s guidance along the way. We can all make a difference and show kindness and compassion. I love animals and have written many books about God’s creatures. But from now on, I’ll have more appreciation and affection for the bunnies, especially those on Peacebunny Island. Dandi Daley Mackall, Author of the Winnie the Horse Gentler series and The One Year Devos for Animal Lovers
From the Inside Flap
Welcome to Peacebunny Island.
For me, spending time with animals has always been a way to learn about how the world works, about human nature, how we relate to each other -and how we can do it better. How can we do a better job listening, sharing kindness and compassion, and investing in unhurried time with others? How can we act more like comfort rabbits?
On paper, the rabbits and their island home belong to me, but I truly believe that they all belong to God and I just get to take care of them. I am blessed to be their guardian and to be present to witness how animals can do things that humans won't or can't. I have seen the way rabbits help people reach deeper inside themselves and unlock emotions they couldn't do otherwise.
They have helped change people's lives. In the process they have changed mine too.
As you open this book, I hope you'll imagine yourself floating along with me to Peacebunny Island--a one-of-a-kind place that reawakens the kid in all of us. Where, with a bunny in your arms, everything in the world can stop for a few moments and just be about love, allowing you to remember how to dream big.
From the Back Cover
When eight-year-old Caleb Smith set out to find a “forever” pet rabbit, his heart broke over the number of unwanted bunnies he found online, including a rare American Blue rabbit―a breed that was on the verge of extinction. Something had to be done.
That’s when Caleb crafted a business plan. He would find a way to prevent pet abandonment, save rare breeds, and find homes for as many rescue rabbits as possible. But as Caleb rescued more and more bunnies, the bunnies began rescuing people. They traveled with volunteers to nursing homes, hospitals, and rehab centers, providing comfort to people struggling with loneliness, trauma, and grief.
As the operation grew, Caleb realized he needed a special place where the bunnies could be trained to help those in need. Caleb and the bunnies needed a miracle. They needed . . . an island.
Peacebunny Island is the heartwarming story of a boy who was driven to create a safe haven for God’s creatures and who shows us that no matter how dark the world may seem, love, hope, and kindness will always win.

About the author

Caleb is the teen visionary behind Peacebunny Island, where he and youth guardians train domestic rabbits to become comfort animals. After renting for a summer, he began paying the mortgage on a 22-acre Mississippi River island where volunteers provide a short-term "summer camp" for rabbits with an outgoing disposition, preparing them for the "Peacebunny Unit; their programs are under the umbrella educational nonprofit organization called the Peacebunny Foundation, which employs a service-learning model for youth as they engage with Caleb's rabbits. The Foundation's animal-assisted activities and crisis response programs have traveled nationally to support people who are dealing with loneliness, trauma and grief, and volunteers have regularly brought comfort rabbits to visit seniors at assisted living homes and hospice. Another volunteer team, the "STEMbunnies Unit" continues to hosts events to share fun facts, getting kids of all ages excited about animal science facts and observations. His memoir, written when he was 16 years old, focuses on the early years and the inspiration to create Peacebunny Island. He still lives in Minnesota with his mom and dad... and continues to help care for a colony of rare heritage breed rabbits and a cadre of other furry friends.

Fortunately for us, we have Caleb. The boy with a plan that is rapidly becoming THE MAN to solve or problems as he uses snuggle-bunny tactics to fuzzy their way into the hearts and lives of the living human family with comfort, support, and love to calm and relax those struggling for peace.
He is building a better place for rabbits and for people who love them. He is changing school programs. He is building a following of volunteers who care for bunnies, raise them, train them and share them with those who need the blessings of the bunnies to bring them the emotional, mental, and medical support to just chill and get better.
The business of bunnies started as a project to save some rare bunnies. Caleb's rabbit was special, but older and did not last until he could drive. But he was able to instill a vision basis in Caleb that was reinforced by a long row of fuzzy critters to form a dream that kept growing with time and events.
Rabbit school started at Caleb's home. Good thing his parents were supportive, but Caleb had to find the way to make it happen. He researched every move in development and worked toward manageable expansion, plus covering the costs of the projects. The loaned out rabbits brought more volunteers. The birthday party volunteers brought more and led to visiting rabbits to hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Rabbit population expansion led to Rabbit farms shared with other animals. Travel distances made care more difficult, but Peacebunny Cottage was much closer and bigger.
Safety for the rabbits and the young volunteers and supporters was important and became a key reason for the dream of Peacebunny Island. But that is not an easy dream to turn into reality. Ownership and use restrictions, flooding, predictors, trespassers, shelter, restrooms, transportation, drinking water, and training facilities are all part of the development plans. Raising the money and legal processes and liability insurance were challenges. But who can tell a fuzzy love bunny "NO!"? Things happen and keep on happening.
This is the first book by Caleb, but the story is not done yet. This book is available today in ebook, hardback, and Audible versions. The 100% of the profits go to Caleb's nonprofit organization for preserving the bunnies and the land, and to take them where needed, such as school shooting sites. This is such a blessing of a project and achange to the world to fix it that it all began with and 8 year old boy. He is double that now and has hundreds of volunteers. By the time he gets out of college, it will be thousands. He will fix the world. Just watch and pet the bunnies. And help.

As you read this book, your heart will fill with love for the rabbits, the drive Caleb has to help both rabbits and people, and his parents for their support in Caleb’s endeavor. Caleb is wise beyond his years. Great read.
