I am rewriting this review because I finished the book and I am quite impressed with how well written this Lotus Sutra guide is. I had read The Lotus Sutra around a dozen times before I read this book and I still did not understand it fully. Any questions I knew I had and also questions I didn’t know I had are absolutely answered and then some. The last section on the book is about the 6 paramitas. I read about the book in reviews prior to purchasing and how Hanh discussed how we can solve world issues, I was not interested in reading anything like that. Not because I don’t want us to solve problems on any level, I just don’t think most people will ever change their ways especially the people who run governments. But, Hanh did an excellent job explaining in relatively short to the point chapters how to implement the 6 paramitas into our daily lives even if you don’t meditate or practice all day. Hanh gives excellent and well explained advice on how to deal with people that make you angry and even use it as a practice towards removing your negative habits and actually being happy all the time. Getting angry at someone can happen for many reasons, but my mind went immediately to the political situation in the US because Hanh says in plain English black and white text that allowing yourself to get angry and not care about the welfare of those people who make you angry all in an effort to be happy or feel safe will actually cause you to not be safe and never be truly happy. Yet, so many people continue to behave in this manner in the political environment or otherwise thinking it will make them happy and it never will. So, most likely it will get worse just like it has been getting worse for years now and this is the exact reason why whether people understand it or not. I highly recommend this book.
