Joy is a word rarely associated with death. Yet joy is ultimately the effect in this collection of stories about Janet Wehr's experiences in witnessing the death of her patients during her fifteen years as a hospice nurse. Her first-hand account gives illuminating and comforting insight into the spiritual aspect of what occurs in the transition between life and death, highlighting the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection as it manifests in the dying process. It also gives a candid impression of hospices and hospice nurses and the services they can provide.

All of Janet's forty-six personal stories are true, fascinating, heart-felt, and thought-provoking. Through her authentic examples, readers gain understanding, hope, and a sense of peace about what is, after all, an inevitable experience for us all. And with that sense of peace, comes joy.

This book is endorsed by the President of Hospice of America and will be used as a training manual by that organization.

Death and dying: it's inevitable for every human being. Yet in the healthcare arena, education and exposure to what most matters in this challenging journey can be misunderstood, sparse and even totally ignored. Get set to change gears and expel fears in a sensitive yet refreshingly frank new book by Janet Wehr, RN: Peaceful Passages: A Hospice Nurse's Stories of Dying Well (Quest Books, October 2015) This wonderful book is practical, inspirational and heart-fueled. It is just plain "good medicine".....a balm that soothes the senses and the soul. Diverse stories "on the job" offer real help and insight for patients and families alike. There is a core sensitivity to dignified care and respect for cultural differences that weaves thru every tale as well as attentiveness to the various ways that people communicate. All this is embraced in a palpable loving atmosphere. Hospice of America has already shown interest in using this book as a training manual. Janet cared for both of my parents who died peacefully, in a hospice environment, twelve years apart. I am forever grateful to her for her compassion as well as her expert care. Now I am honored and blessed to let others know about Janet as she looks back at seventeen years of hospice nursing. This is a gem of a book filled with wisdom, soul-searching and honoring a person thru days, weeks or months until his very last breath; for every moment in the remains of one's life is good and precious. Find a place for Janet's book on your bookshelf; she cares for and about her patients deeply and it shows.

I would strongly recommend this book to any one but most especially to those who are leery of the subject of death and dying, who fear what may or may not happen in the last days and hours of a loved one's or their own lives. What you may learn here could be highly reassuring.

Janet Wehr put her heart and soul into this lovely collection of experiences, it is evident. I found it intriguing and interesting. Being a person who has gone through the death and loss cycle several times, in many different scenarios, what I learned from Janet's experience both reassured me and reaffirmed that which I had already learned about helping both myself and others deal with death and dying.

If you are facing the aspect of someone you care for being terminally ill, or have lost a beloved, I feel reading this book will bring serenity to the spirit. Again, enthusiastically recommended.

After reading Janet Wehr's Peaceful Passages, I knew this was a book I would want to read over and over again. It is written with such compassion and empathy, it feels as though a part of me was inside each experience. The stories are so interesting and compelling, I had great difficulty putting it down! This beautifully written book touched my soul in so many ways, places inside myself I didn't even realized existed. Thank you so much for your genuine love and mercy you demonstrate with the patients and families of those who needed you at this critical place in life and death.

Simply the most important book I have ever read. So well written and an easy read. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting. This book needs to be read by everyone. I felt so strongly about it that I purchased 20 copies and gave them as Christmas gifts. We all will need to deal with death, whether it be a loved one or our own. This book shows us a little insight into how death can be dealt with, with dignity, faith, and most of all love. There can be joy in dying. Thank you Janet for sharing all of your stories.

This is an amazing book and for me has been life changing. I guess like most, death is the absolute most terrifying thing I could think of, for myself or a loved one. I’ve been searching and reading different writings on it to try and ease my fears. This book has been the answer for me.

Our society has tried so hard to look away from and ignore death, but this book gently and confidently asks us to look it in the eye and come to peace with where our journey on this earth must go. Janet, a hospice nurse, explains the natural process of a body and soul preparing itself for death in such gentle and peaceful terms. I wish I had read this book earlier in my life! I have been a close witness to the death (in hospice) of my father and a good friend, and I would have been a better bedside partner for them if I had read this book before going through the process. The overwhelming feeling through all of it is PEACE.

This is an incredible first hand perspective on what is clearly one of the most significant moments in anyone's life. There is a subtle but vital message here, skillfully shared by someone who's experienced this moment with hundred's of passing souls. And it's not just for when we or a loved one is facing the end of days, though it's a MUST read in that scenario. It's as much about life as death, maybe more so, it sheds light.

Read this book in 3 hours I couldn't put it down. Being a carer for 6 years and now a student nurse I have always been drawn towards hospice care and this has just further cemented it. There's no greater honour than caring for someone at the end of their life.

My friend recommended this book after my sister died. It is the most amazingly powerful book I have ever read. It is both emotional and uplifting at the same time. If you are struggling to grieve or are scared of dying, I thoroughly recommend it. It is full of her personal experiences which you cannot fail to be moved by.

This a great book to give anyone coping the loss of a loved one. I bought it with two friends in mind, one has jjust lost her sister to cancer and she has got back to me after reading it and said it has helped and comforted her a great deal. She has recommended it to other members of her family.Easy to read as it is broken down into small chunks of individual stories.

An excellent read explaining death which will help give people a confidence that death is not something to fear especially if you align it to an understanding of the Christian faith
