So my search began for something different. Just looking at the photos here on amazon I wasnt all that impressed with the design of Peak Designs wrist strap, but it looked like it would fit my purpose, and I had read all the rave reviews on their other products. So I went ahead an ordered it.
I sure am glad I did. I didnt realize how much better this product was going to be. First the material is similar to seatbelt material, but it very comfortable and lightweight. I was worried it might be more rigid and dig into my wrist if I had any weight on it.
All the materials used seem very well made, and I like that the lanyards coming off the buttons are designed to let you know when you might want to replace them. So simple, but a great idea for photographers who worry about these types of things.
It fills a need I had, and I would recommend this product for anyone else that doesnt like to use neck straps to secure their camera when out and about.
Now if I could just talk them into making their original slide longer for us bigger guys, I would be set.
- Comfortable... and I mean really comfortable!
- Easily adjustable
- Converting the strap into a bracelet when not in use is just awesome!
- Ability of being able to snap the anchors on and off is the best thing!
- The design just simply makes sense!
The 1 con:
- The strap should be slightly longer... even by a couple of inches would make a world of difference. My wrists are wider than the average, and even though I can convert the strap into a bracelet, I'm barely able to snap the anchor. If the strap was just a couple of inches longer, it would wrap around and snap easily, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
I use this with my X-T1 with the grip, and connect the anchor to the Peak Design PROdrive screw, which I have connected to the bottom of the grip instead of the loops on the the body itself. This way, the strap is not obtrusive and I don't have to make any adjustments. Overall, it works really well. Hopefully, Peak Design will come out with a longer strap for an update... maybe a "Cuff XL?"
My one gripe about this strap is it's size. I agree with other reviewers who noted that the strap is surprisingly short. If they added about two inches to the length, it would make it easier (i.e., quicker and more convenient) to thread my medium- to large-ish hands through the wrist loop. Once it's on your hand, there is plenty of slack after tightening the loop down on your wrist, especially if you have slender wrists like I do. But seriously, I think most people are like me and will want to be able to slide it over their hand (and off again) rapidly. With the loop fully open, it fits easily over my hand, yet snug enough that I do often need to use both hands to get it on or off, which is annoying and somewhat at odds with the desired convenience of a wrist strap. However, there isn't much slack left unless you cinch the strap down on your wrist, which I don't like. Fortunately, on an X-T2, there is enough slack even with the wrist loop fully open that I can reach all the controls, but I'm not sure that would be true on a much larger camera.
Ultimately, despite the minor inconvenience that makes me wish for an extra inch or two in the length of the strap, I really like the design and I trust that it is secure and sturdy enough not to break and drop my camera.
[UPDATE 6-14-2017: I have come to appreciate the quick-release feature of this strap greatly! While I did not expect to find it useful because of my preference to slip my hand in and out of the strap instead, I have since realized that, while using a tripod, it is quicker and easier to just attach/detach the little quick-release puck from the strap as I swap between hand-holding and tripod-mounted shots. It's quick and easy, and it also means that the strap is on my wrist instead of dangling from the camera getting tangled on any of the tripod controls as I shift the orientation of the ball head. So, it turns out the quick release function is more useful/convenient than I initially believed. I still wish the length of the strap were slightly longer, but if not for that lingering qualm, this would easily be a 5-star product.]
