From the Back Cover
Forced to shoot a fellow police officer, CW McCoy surrenders her gun, her badge and her confidence to take refuge in Southwest Florida. There, in the wealthy tourist mecca of Spanish Point, CW sells luxury real estate and cares for her ailing grandfather.
But even in paradise, violence finds her like a divining rod.
Declared dead by the courts, Bobby Lee Darby bursts into CW's office to demand the family friend clear his name in a scheme to bilk millions from investors. When CW refuses, the fugitive financier kidnaps Pap to ensure her cooperation, triggering a chain of burglary, assault and murder that convinces local police that the former cop has gone rogue.
Racing to find Darby, CW must confront her violent past, risky affairs and love-hate relationship with Southwest Florida before those personal demons turn her new-found paradise into hell on earth. --This text refers to the paperback edition.
"Hard-boiled ex-cop Candace 'CW' McCoy tries to keep her cool as she solves a case of embezzlement, kidnapping, and murder in the Florida heat.
"Widmer has a great sense of place; he easily brings the town of Spanish Point and its colorful cast of characters to life. CW is a great character--a noir detective trying to outrun her own past, suffering no fools along the way. She also has a few potential love interests that pop up, men who truly seem to admire her impulsive toughness." --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Setting is a key character here, and Widmer gives readers who visit Florida as tourists (or, even seasonal residents) a bit of a look "behind the curtain." One of Widmer's great strengths is his ability to see details and make connections not visible to a more casual observer, and in this book, that talent is on display. Widmer is a master of uncovering quirky and dark details and dragging them into the light of his narrative. (Something that I'm sure we'll see even more of in his future offerings.)
Because the main character is a reluctant "women sleuth", I was sometimes left a bit underwhelmed by her actions. Or, maybe I was overwhelmed by her inaction. CW is still recovering from her own trauma, and it makes sense that she is struggling against being dragged back into the world of crime and punishment, but there were times when this struggle came across as a kind of passivity that didn't sit "quite right."
That said, CW McCoy is the sort of character that will become more fully realized as this series progresses, and there is plenty of foundation given by Widmer to make me look forward to more. And, his eye for detail and ability to cut through the glossy layers of public life make this an interesting read for anyone whose only taste of Florida comes from the comfort of a hotel room or the annual week spent at the beach condo.
I enjoyed this book very much! The thorough detail made me feel like I knew all the characters, which always makes for the best story, and I couldn't put it down. This isn't the genre my husband usually likes or reads, so he surprised me by reading every chance he got while we were on vacation and thoroughly enjoying it, as I did! This is a fun book which will keep you guessing, and we're looking forward to the next book in this series! - LKW
