I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown: Deluxe Edition Christmas goes to the dogs in this delightful holiday charmer! Have you ever felt like “happiness is a warm puppy?” Rerun Van Pelt sure does. As the youngest sibling, Rerun finds it hard to pry older brother Linus away from his security blanket and almost impossible to relate to crabby older sister Lucy. All Rerun wants for Christmas is his very own dog. But Rerun’s mom doesn’t think he’s ready and Charlie Brown won’t part with Snoopy. So, when Snoopy’s brother Spike visits, Rerun is determined to adopt him. But is he really ready for Spike – who’s part beagle and part disaster? Furry fun and friendship are unleashed in this yuletide Peanuts perennial. Also included is another holiday tale – Happy New Year, Charlie Brown – where Charlie Brown must complete a book report on War and Peace over the holiday break. True to form, there is no peace on earth for the constantly distracted Charlie Brown!

A series of animated shows featuring the Peanuts characters have been popular ever since 1965, when the first one, "A Charlie Brown Christmas," first aired on American television. Since then numerous television specials and several movies have been created, all highlighting the adventures of this boy with a round head that owns a beagle that at times seems to be smarter than the average human. Schulz would die in 2000, but that did not keep Peanuts from taking on the film industry one more time in 2015 with a CGI animated movie that would become a box office success, and introduce these endearing characters to a new generation.
This film is a television special that was originally broadcast in 2003, and features Rerun van Pelt (Lucy and Linus's little brother), who is now in kindergarten, when he decides that he wants a dog for Christmas as a playmate. Since his family is against this idea, Snoopy asks his brother Spike, who lives alone in the Mojave Desert, to come and visit. The resulting series of events is Peanuts comedy at its best as Rerun finds that owning a pet can be a big, but rewarding, responsibility. While not the big, slap-dash, explosions every three minutes show that most cartoons for kids seem to consist of today, this one, with its low-key, understated style, is what we as adults remember as the best of the Charlie Brown specials. Definitely recommended, even if you have no children.
The story revolves around Linus and Lucy Van Pelt's baby brother Rerun who, as the title states, wants a dog for Christmas. He likes having fun with Snoopy and so he decides that it would be great if he had a dog of his own. But his mother won't let him have one and so he has to settle with hanging out with Snoopy's brother Spike, who comes down for a visit.
Rerun is a great character and very endearing, so even though this Peanuts special focuses a lot of screen time on him, you won't be missing the other characters too much--and all the main ones make appearances throughout IWADFCCB anyway.
The extras include a bonus TV special and a featurette:
***BONUS SHOW***
--- Happy New Year, Charlie Brown ---
Fun episode that has the Peanuts gang celebrating New Year's Eve and Charlie Brown misses an opportunity to get a midnight kiss from the red-haired girl. The only thing that bothered me about this episode was that "Peppermint Patty's" voice was a little high for my taste. Here, she actually sounds like a girl rather than an ambiguous character like in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (Remastered Deluxe Edition) .
***FEATURETTE***
--- Sibling Rivalry: Growing Up Van Pelt ---11:09-minutes
The featurette has Lee Mendelson (executive producer), Jeannie Schulz (wife of the late Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz), Nat Gertler (Peanuts historian), and Dana Chidekel (author) discuss the intro of the character "Rerun," who made his debut in the comic strip in 1972. They talk about the character's appearance throughout the years and how this cartoon was made after Schulz's death, etc. and they talk about how "I Want A Dog..." was basically taken right from the comic strip.
***TRAILERS***
Trailers for Peanuts: 1970's Collection, Vol. 1 (It's a Mystery Charlie Brown / Play It Again / A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving / It's the Easter Beagle / There's No Time for Love / You're Not Elected) , It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Remastered Deluxe Edition) , and Peanuts: Snoopy's Reunion .
Anyway, this is another great episode from Peanuts and would make a great addition to your Charlie Brown collection.
