Editorial Reviews

On Pearl, Gaucho's fourth album, the San Francisco sextet sounds like it has unearthed a treasure trove of forgotten Jazz Age songs, but only two of the dozen deliriously swinging tunes are standards. The others are the result of an inspired songwriting collaboration between Gaucho's Dave Ricketts and New York vocalist Tamar Korn. The band's synthesis of New Orleans polyphony and Gypsy jazz is driven by accordionist Rob Reich, drum kit and Cheek-o-Phone maestro Pete Devine, reed expert Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, B52s), and former Turk Murphy sideman, cornet master Leon Oakley. In 2009 Gaucho was voted the Best jazz/blues band in SF Weekly's readers poll.

One of the tracks (Angel I think) came up on Pandora. I had some difficulty finding it. But I loved the guitar.

Tamar Korn is a marvelous vocalist and he's here with excellent musicians doing her brand of vintage music. I couldn't take this CD out of my car. Listened to it four times through before I changed it. Highly recommended

I personally found most of the album pleasant but not overly remarkable, with one exception. "Angel" is a six-star a classic, astounding, inspired, overwhelming jewel whose value far exceeds that of pearls. So, I consequentially gave the album a rating of 3 by setting an average betwwen "Angel" at 6, and the rest twixt 2-4.

I really enjoy the way Ms. Korn interacts with the timbres of Gaucho. A good fit, IMHO. Beautiful music.
