Prince Frederick beats the princess and her mother enjoys seeing her daughter suffer. Clare, Charles, and Sarah devise a plan to escape, Clare knows she could not marry the Prince and what use would a dead queen be? She ends up being captured by the savages and is carried away by Bracus who is in charge. She meets others on the outside such as Matthew, Joseph, Phillip, Anna, etc. She discovers that she he is considered one of the "select". Of course we have Charles, the Queen and her men as well as the Prince and his guards who leave the sphere and go to the outside in search of their princess, all for different reasons. There is so much adventure in this book and so, so much more to tell. I truly hope you decide to read this book. You will not want to put it down when you start. You will be shocked, amazed, in awe, excited and so many more feelings. One of the best books I have read in a while.
America suffers a dark gloomy apocalyptic event which tosses them into the past of their own history mixed with micro splashes of the future. Citizens dwell in spheres created one hundred forty years prior, designed to protect them from the fatal results of the cataclysmic events that occured.
Society has reverted to medieval times with Kings, Queens, and a high court. Clara, princess and royalty faces torment and abuse everyday. With arranged marriages, she is to be forced to marry a tyrant who physcially tortures and threatens to do worse, all while her mother watches and approves.
With the help of her closest friends as well as citizens who hope for a better future, she escapes the sphere, only to be taken by savages.
Clara faces danger and fear of the unknown when she discovers the outside was so much more than what they were taught all their lives. Secrets reveal themselves like petals of a flower slowly opening.
With newly opened eyes and heart, Clara discovers that the outside people are not savages afterall and her traumatic experience was really a blessing in disguise.
I have to say that I downloaded this book on my kindle app, only because it was free at the time. That was four years ago. I really wish I had read it sooner because I didn’t want to stop. My heart went out to Clara and the abuse and torment she endured. Now there are several books in this series and I can’t wait to get my hands on book two.
I recommend this dark paranormal fantasy to anyone who is interested is something unique and out of the norm.
Will definitely be adding Tamara Rose Blodgett to my favorite author’s list.
Now on to the book, the world building could have been SO much more. I kept hoping the author would describe more about the sphere, the Guardian's, build more up about the Kingdom's, but it never happens. A brief mention of "rocks falling from the sky" and people having to live inside because they would die outside. Perhaps this is all addressed in later installments of the series, but it was very vague and just kept me wondering...what is up with the salt? Did I miss it, or was it never explained? Salt will tear open the walls, why?
The premise of the book is Clara (main heroine) is a seriously abused Princess in the Kingdom of Ohio. You find out later why her mother, The Queen beats her, but the Queen herself is a shallow character, nothing more than a drunk, and the Prince she is to marry is also abusive. She is constantly under attack in the book, and it seems like every male who doesn't want to be with her, wants to rape her or attack her.
I did like Charles at first, author ruined the integrity of this sweet friend of hers with jealously and anger towards the end of the book which didn't seem to be his persona at the start of the book.
Clara herself is a likable enough heroine, but not to the point that men swoon over her the way they do. I hope to see her character grow in the next book, learn more about her. All we know is her dad died and her mom was an evil abusive queen, we don't get much back story on Clara, just thrown into her awful situation.
The ending of the book did leave me wondering if the next book will answer some of my questions, so I did buy it, and I seriously hope it does. I also hope there are no more male suitors thrown into the story, because honestly it seemed to be getting ridiculous by the end of the book.
I don't want it to sound like I hated this book, because it was a decent enough read, and I'll give book 2 a chance but if things don't pick up and the editing and formatting is terrible I may give up on the series.
