Editorial Reviews
Annie's sixth album, "Pearl Street," originally written as a one-person performance piece, is a song cycle of ten linked songs that follow the same characters through ten years of their lives. It follows "Swerve" (2001), the critically acclaimed release which featured Annie's phenomenal band including Michael Visceglia (Suzanne Vega) on bass, Denny McDermott (Steely Dan) on drums and Billy Masters (Dar Williams) on electric guitar. The production on "Pearl Street" is a bit more modern and varied, utilizing samples and featuring the intricate and unconventional guitar work of Duke McVinney (Shivaree). Here Annie's trademark lyrical style fuses with modern musical elements to create a unique musical subgenre.

My favorite tracks are "Lori's Long Legs" and "Tulsa". I am unable to understand why we have to listen to silence in "Intermission", the first time I played the CD, I thought it was all over, and missed the interesting "Interview", and the final track "Synopsis", which is also one of the better tracks on the CD.
In summary, if you are new to Annie's music, try one of her other releases first. If you are addicted to her interesting and sensuous vocal style, as I am, you will want to buy this CD anyway!
style & voice, also varied. This one in some ways is her most ambitious: almost a
song cycle or odd kaleidoscopic 'novel' w. music, even a self-interview 'self criticism,' and a host of characters who keep appearing, changing, reappearing in different guises. I do find the 'Intermission' silence a bit over the top and unecessary, but I suppose it's a decided 'break' leading to final section. I think the other production ideas though are very good & add some underpining to her voice/guitar. Of course, I like the 'stark' Annie of "Steady Steady Yes" and others too. I still think "Courage My Love" is my fave AG, but this and the others are also really excellent. Nobody is really quite like Annie-- & that's amazing in this day and age!
