Writers of more tame bodice-rippers have gone to The Pearl's deep well of language, calling-card customs, dress, food names, and class relations with great frequency and found surprising insights into the sexy side of human nature. Not for Pooh.

Keeping in mind that this book purports to be a collection of genuine Victorian erotic journals, I found it to be rather tedious in its length and repetitiveness. In reading it, I received the impression that it was written to appeal to those who are attracted to the concept of "naughty" (as opposed to erotic) literature. In the late 1800's, I suppose that "The Pearl" was the height of forbidden writing.
The 18 journals are described as being composed of "serialised novels, lewd short stories, gossip of the day, letters from readers, licentious limericks and naughty jokes". At over 600 pages, I was well and truly bored before I was halfway through. The novels and short stories contain extremely repetitive themes. For example, there are only so many ways of describing a scene of someone being whipped with a birch.
The language used throughout is very similar and appears to be the work of one person. It all becomes very predictable after reading a couple of the journals.
If you're looking for truly interesting stories with well developed plots and characters, this is not the book for you. If all you want is a collection of naughty limericks, jokes and stories all following the same vein, then you will love this.

The book contains issues of the Pearl magazine. I found it difficult to read because the book is organised by issue. Therefore, you read the first issue and get part 1 of the stories, then have to read the second issue to get part two of the stories and so on. I found it difficult to separate the stories as a result and because they were similar. There are numerous poems, limericks and songs etc interspersed with the stories but I found these incomprehensible at times.

The grammar is supposed to be that of the 1880's but I found it was a mix of Victorian style dialogue and some modern words - perhaps the latter stem from the Victorian times.

All the stories are similar, containing detailed debauchery mainly involving underage [for modern times] sex with each other or their significant elders, incest, same sex, and anal. The graphic nature of the stories was a surprise but they are well written and with very little foul language.

I would have given this book 5 stars for the stories themselves as they are excellent. However, I dock one star for the way the book is laid out, which made it more difficult for me to red over a period of time, and the Victorian verbiage.
