from a none-tube amp. I've owned many tube amps in the 44 years that I've been playing (mostly hard rock, blues, and metal), and although they sound great on stage, they can have a lot of different problems, like popping noises, loud hissing , and just plain blowing out. The 15 watt version of the Vypyr probably isn't loud enough to be heard over a rock drummer, it would be fine for other types of practicing, like with a bass player and another guitarist let's say. I bought it mostly for recording, the 8" speaker is tweeked to sound full and delivers good low end, miced with a condenser mic it sounds like a cranked stack, not fuzzy and fizzy like plug-ins, not to mention that it of course doesn't use up any CPU, like a plug-in would; also, you don't need to turn up the volume to get a good sound, I normally set the volume to about 2, and it gives me great sustain. The perfect amp for beginners or more experienced players. I was a big Line 6 fan for a while but this amp has much better tone, for both clean and high-gain applications.
Fast forward thirty years: -my oldest son is 14, and wants to learn the guitar. he's a righty, and is eager to learn enough to merit an electric guitar of his own. We buy him an entry level Washburn and find this Peavey Vypyr 15 on Amazon for an amazing price; Sold! He loves the multitude of models, effects, and controls that this amp has waiting to unleash. I've kept my old Vantage in a guitar case all these years, waiting for that "someday" when I'd venture to play again. My Whirlwind guitar cable is still packed in the case, waiting patiently to be brought out and plugged in. Well, that old guitar has never sounded so lively and spry as when I played it through this new Peavey!
The "clean" and "dirty" channels are worth the money alone, notwithstanding the effects that used to be only a pipe dream for me back in the '80's!
The vast amount of reviews here (and also on youtube) can and do explain much more precisely the amp's capabilities; I'm just an excited Dad who is happy to have a second chance at enjoying his guitar, as well as being able to provide his son with an awesome piece of equipment to further kindle his interest and desire to learn a musical instrument.
(Since the price on Amazon is still well below $99, I have just ordered a second Peavey Vypyr so I don't have to share!)
Thanks, Peavey! We're never too old to "rock on'!!
