I've owned this amp for over a month now and it's been a pleasure to just plug in and get a variety of great sounds
from a none-tube amp. I've owned many tube amps in the 44 years that I've been playing (mostly hard rock, blues, and metal), and although they sound great on stage, they can have a lot of different problems, like popping noises, loud hissing , and just plain blowing out. The 15 watt version of the Vypyr probably isn't loud enough to be heard over a rock drummer, it would be fine for other types of practicing, like with a bass player and another guitarist let's say. I bought it mostly for recording, the 8" speaker is tweeked to sound full and delivers good low end, miced with a condenser mic it sounds like a cranked stack, not fuzzy and fizzy like plug-ins, not to mention that it of course doesn't use up any CPU, like a plug-in would; also, you don't need to turn up the volume to get a good sound, I normally set the volume to about 2, and it gives me great sustain. The perfect amp for beginners or more experienced players. I was a big Line 6 fan for a while but this amp has much better tone, for both clean and high-gain applications.

Let's start by saying I've had this amp for about ten years now, and have powered it up maybe 20 times. The longest I've had it on at any one time was about 15 minutes, so all in all it's been powered up less than 4 hrs. In ten years! Needless to say I don't like it and would not recommend it to anyone, unless you have a LOT of time to fiddle with the ridiculous amount of effects and settings. Can you tweak the settings quickly to get the sound you want...no. Is it easy to get to the the effect you want to edit....no. Are there simple navigation tools to edit with...no. Does it sound good....merely "meh".
If you want an amp you can simply USE and edit on the fly...do not get this amp. In fact I'm going to Guitar Center tomorrow to get rid of it...if they'll even take it. A Fender Champion 40 looks good. Just a simple plug and play amp with quick sound shaping bass, treble, presence, and gain. I'm may get separate pedals for shaping the sound they way I want to...reverb, overdrive, delay, and chorus. That's it. I don't want to sound like Van Halen, Metallica, Zakk whoever, etc. Just because you can cram all the electronics onto a board and sell it for cheap, doesn't mean you have to. I realize that amp makers wants to appeal to a younger audience, one who wants all the bells and whistles. But less is more in this case. And most of the music made between1950 and 1990 was made with very little gear...just used very creatively. Please do your homework and watch videos on how useful a product will be, how easy it is to use, and lastly how useful it will be. If you can do the same thing with less gear, do yourself a favor and do it that way. If you don't want to haul around a simple amp and a small pedal board, then get as complicated as you want. It's your money, use it the way you want.

The advantage of this amp is

* lightweight
* amp models
* lots of effects
* presets & custom presets
* headphone out and 1/8 input for play along style

Disadvantages:

* modeled artifacts
* EQ is a bit bumpy in the low end and thin in the upper
* no tap tempo for effects

but what do you want in a $99 amp? all in all this amp is great for $99 bucks! In my experiment with a Fender Strat and a Gibson style guitar i found the amps works well for both. Really when it comes to modeled amps Line6 is the king of the hill, but this is an excellent starter amp.

If you are a bit more into higher fidelity (and true tube) for lower volumes, I would suggest a VOX AC4tv ($249 MF) or Epiphone Valve Junior (~$200) as they are simply awsome true tube 15 watts though a bit more in cost. Peavy's classic 30's 30Watt($649 MF) are simply awesome and can achieve all kinds of sounds, though when it comes to cost first your choice really is the Peavy Vyper or Line 6 Spider IV 15 15W 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp. (both $99)

After doing tons of research on all the $100 range amps out there, I decided that Peavey was the way to go. It has more ways to tweak your sound than anything I've ever seen before, you might be a bit overwhelmed at first but eventually you will find yourself dialing in the sound you want to play any style of music you can imagine. It's user friendly but I recommend watching a couple of reviews on youtube to see how it works because it doesn't come with printed instructions-- they are on a CD included with the amp. You can get very close, if not spot-on, to any guitarist's tone and for such a small amp this thing can be cranked to totally unnecessary levels of volume. It sounds great at low volumes too. It's relatively light, seems to be durable enough for its intended use, and although it is made in China the build quality is very good. I took mine apart and the electronics are not sloppy like some of the other name-brand amps I've seen. Overall it is a great amp and does exactly what I wanted it to do. I did take away one star because this amp seems to be overly sensitive to unintended noise from the guitar, no matter what setting it's on I hear more sounds I didn't intend to make than with other amps. If you're a pro this might not be an issue but for someone like me who is learning, the amp isn't very forgiving. Think of it as a tough teacher, the kind you have to work extra hard to earn its respect. It's not a deal breaker at all, but a quirk that takes some getting used to. Also I have not used Peavey's support but I've heard many many times that they are a fantastic company to deal with if you need any help at all. That's hard to find these days so I feel good about owning their products.
