5.0 out of 5 stars Comparison of Pebble's three metal-housed watches: Original Steel, Time Steel, and new Round
By JanaMay on November 14, 2015
Comparison: [[ASIN:B00UV3QXUW Pebble Steel Smart Watch for iPhone and Android Devices]], Pebble Time Steel(this product), and [[ASIN:B015N8XR9O Pebble Time Round 20mm Smartwatch for Apple/Android Devices - Black/Black]] (Pictured below: Original with black band, Time Steel in yellow gold w/red band and Round in rose gold w/pearl white band)

I have access to all three Pebbles: I own the Time Steel and the new Round and my roommate has the Original, so I'm comparing them here:

Look and Feel: The Pebble Round looks most like a watch, coming in at just smaller than the Timex Weekender. It's really light and comfortable, no heavier than a Swatch. There's a cool, chunky retro feel to the Original Steel, but it's too big for my wrist. The Time Steel FELT slick and small until the Round came along! I can still dig the Time Steel for its nerdy-cool look, though. The Original Steel has a black-and-white LED screen with a distinct bluish cast. The Time Steel and the Round have color e-paper screens. All three have always-on screens that can be viewed really well in bright light, as well as a backlight. The backlight adds a bluish cast and tones down the contrast on the color screens. (see pic below)
Winner: Round

Usability/Accessibility: All three Pebbles use a four-button system of navigation that is really intuitive and easy. If you balk at the lack of a touch screen, think again. With a touch screen, there's always an element of uncertainty (did I tap it hard enough? Did my finger slip? Did I hit the right tiny image?) and you have to wait to see it react and then choose your next thing. With buttons, you go back to the ease of your old digital watch- you can reach down and press a button to pause your music or stop an alarm-you don't have to flick it on, swipe to the control screen, and press the tiny "cancel" dot.
Winner: Three-way tie. Just wanted to point out the awesomeness of going back to buttons.

Battery: The Time Steel wins this one by a landslide. They promise 7-10 days. If you use sleep tracking or an animated watchface it's on the low end of that, but it's pretty accurate. I've had it go ten days several times. The Original Steel gets about 4-5 days on a charge, and the Round runs down in two days (but can be charged in 15 min).
Winner: Time Steel, definitely.

Apps/OS: All three Pebbles work on iOS and Android by downloading the Pebble control app and then downloading apps inside the control app. The Original uses an older control app than the other two, but it's fairly easy to switch between them. The Original Steel still has the old OS, meaning that you can only install 8 apps at a time and there's no insta-calendar (called the Timeline by the Pebble folks). There has been an update promised; Pebble has said that they're bringing the Timeline OS to the old Pebbles, but as of this writing it hasn't happened yet. The timeline OS and unlimited apps is a key part of my enjoyment of the Pebbles. The Time Steel functions perfectly, every time, in my experience. It's never stalled, lagged, frozen, did something unexpected, or needed a reboot. The OS is just really, really good. The Round is so new that most of the apps in the Pebble store aren't optimized for it yet, so the apps are pretty limited. This will probably get better as time goes on, but right now...
Winner: Time Steel

Water resistance: The Original Pebble Steel is water resistant to 5M. I've never worn this in the water, so I can't say. The Pebble Time Steel is water resistant to 30M. I've gone swimming and showered in this watch and it's fine. The Round is listed as "splashproof;" I haven't tested that either.
Winner: Time Steel

Microphone/Voice input: The Original Pebble Steel has no microphone. The Time Steel and Round can take voice input to answer texts, add items to the timeline, or take quick voice notes (all available with different apps in the Pebble App Store). I've had great results with the voice recognition on both; I don't know if it's my imagination, but the Round's voice recognition seems slightly better.
Winner: Slight edge to the Round

Bands: All three Pebbles have removable bands, but the Time Steel and Round have quick-release bands, while the Original Pebble has a split-band that's a little harder to find.
Tie: Time Steel and Round

Overall winner: The Time Steel still takes the gold for me because of its battery life, water resistance, and full app suite. When the Round's app list catches up, though, it's gonna be a killer. It's lovely. The Original Steel is nifty-retro, but until you know if the Timeline OS will be ported over there I'd avoid it. The 8-app limit is a bummer.
TIME STEEL FOR THE WIN!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty dang awesome wearable
By GradeA on January 12, 2016
So I spent quite a bit of time evaluating a couple different "wearable devices": (1) The black stainless steel Apple Watch, (2) The Pebble Time, and now finally (3) the Pebble Time Steel. Given the fact that my wife works for Apple, I of course had to try out the latest and greatest watch, figuring that I'd try "the best watch" available for an iPhone 6. After wearing it for a month, I got a feel for what I wanted in a wearable device in regards to my lifestyle. Unfortunately for Apple, it was not with the Apple Watch.

Here is what was missing for me:
- Battery life
- The use of the accelerometer to turn on/off the display actually was buggy for how I used it
- Officially not waterproof...unofficially it is!
- It was heavy with the metal band

So I ended up switching it to the Pebble Time and now the Pebble Time Steel. I've gotta say that the Pebble shined after our 1-week family trip to Hawaii. Even my wife who uses an Apple Watch had to give credit to the following:
- It lasted an entire week with only a short 1-hour charge towards the end
- Snorkeling and swimming in the ocean
- rough-housing in the pool
- obvious continuous notifications
- and daily use to check the weather

To summarize here are the pro's and con's based on my experience with the 3-watches

Pro's
====
- The Pebble Time lasts about 4 days of "normal" use. The Pebble Time Steel seems to last 5+ days with similar usage
- Always on display
- Decent workout tracking
- Great sleep tracking since I never really take off my watch. I prefer the Misfit app for this.
- Timeline view is awesome to see events
- Great ESPN app that sends me reminders of game times as well as the final scores after the game ends
- Works with standard 22mm watch bands
- Officially waterproof unlike Apple Watch
- Looks great and still very light on the wrist

Con's
====
- Doesn't offer as many integrations with Apple products, but that's because of Apple
- Most apps seem very gimicky and childish
- No heart rate monitoring
- Workout tracking isn't as accurate or full-featured as like an actual workout band (e.g. fitbit) or the Apple Watch
- Occasional issues connecting with bluetooth
- watch faces aren't as pretty or functional as an Apple watch
- cannot reply to txt's or really anything beyond receiving a notification message
- No integration with Siri or voice commands
- companion apps are a joke!

So is this the perfect smart watch...absolutely not. But anyone that is in technology industry should know that there are pro's and con's to every technical decision. I think every watch available out there was designed to be the best watch for their customer base; what will be interesting is which brands and wearable devices will consumers gravitate towards. My feeling is that Apple Watch will continue to be successful, but I surely hope that Pebble continues to remain relevant over the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, usable smartwatch!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2017
I have been using Pebble Time Steel for about 2 months now on a daily basis, paired with a Samsung S7 Edge.

IMHO, Pebble Time Steel is the most usable smart watch produced to date. It features a classic design, durable steel case, long battery, and always-on screen. It doesn't feel like a gimmick. It is easy to use, reliable and dependable.

During the business day, thanks to its excellent notifications, it allows me to put my phone aside and forget it exists for a while. And this, for me, is priceless.

BUILD QUALITY
The entire case is made of steel with a black surround band just beneath the screen. PVD (Physical vapor deposition) powder coating is used to give colour, more obvious with the Black and Gold versions. Silver is also powder coated (why? it was not necessary) but probably masks any scratches better.

The buttons operate well with distinct pressure points, excellent ergonomics and the micro-dotted texture is tactile enough to operate without even looking. Left top button takes you back to the home screen. Top and bottom right buttons to scroll and middle right button to select. Easy.

The beige strap that comes with the watch is usable but will not last long. The watch accepts standard 22mm straps so replacing it with stainless steel or a silicone straps is a no-brainer.
The screen is covered with Gorilla glass which seems to feature an oleophobic coating. The bezels are less obvious that the plain Pebble time simply because the glass covers the entire screen. It would be useful to have larger screen and slimmer bezels. This would be the case for Pebble 2 until Fitbit bought Pebble and killed off the future release.

Design wise, I love the classic rectangular shape with rounded corners. Also if you look closely from the side, you will notice that the whole watch has a slight curvature. This makes it more comfortable on the wrist. It feels just right. A great deal of attention to detail seems to have gone into the design.

FUNCTION
Installation is simple and took no more than 5 minutes. Download the Pebble app on your phone, connect the watch to the phone via bluetooth and setup through the app. Easy.

The Pebble App has three main menus: Watchfaces, Apps and Notifications.

Having tried a few watchfaces, my favourites are:
YWeather by David Rodriguez Rincon, Clean&Smart by Yuriy Galanter and Blue Futuristic by Paliantech. I settled for YWeather because it provides all the information I need: time, day/date/month, temperature and weather, current location and battery charge. It is well designed, although if I am honest, the alignment for the day and date could be better. But this is me being pedantic.

Every time there is a notification, it pops up on the watch. Gmail, twitter, whatsapp, facebook, google maps - it's all there. Even Uber, call the taxi and check the registration plate and ETA on the watch, no need to hold your phone. All notifications can be turned on/off from the app or the watch. You can mute on weekdays and/or weekends.

The watch vibrates every time there is a notification, so it alerts you even in noisy environments. Since I started used Pebble, my phone is always on silent and I have never missed any calls. Fantastic!!

I installed a couple golf apps and tried them. The watch relies on the phone for GPS reception but it works. Swing by Swing was a good allrounder. It displays your distance to the hole and records your round.

There are also apps for running, cycling, tools and utilities, remote controls and games. Some are more useful than others.

BATTERY
The manufacturer suggests a 10-day battery. I have been using the watch about 12 hours a day connected to my phone and I am getting approximately 15-17 days from a single charge, even without switching on airplane mode. I don't use step counting or any other health features which probably improves battery life.

When not on my wrist, I simply turn off the phone's bluetooth and that's it. In the morning I turn on the phone bluetooth on and the phone simply reconnects.
When on airplane mode, I think it will last about a month on a single charge.

SCREEN
The reason the battery lasts this long is its e-ink screen. It is a beautiful 64-color e-paper always-on display with 144x168 resolution and a pixel density of 182 ppi. The pixel density is lower than the ~300dpi of the Apple watch but all content is perfectly legible. E-ink screens (like the Amazon kindle) are like printed paper. So,like paper, it is perfectly legible in bright sunlight. Emails and notifications are easy to read but most importantly the screen is always on. Always. Just like a normal watch. You turn your writch, you read the the time, date and temperature.

For dimmer environments, the screen has backlighting so you can read even in complete darkness.

OVERALL
I love the design, it is well-built, easy to use and easy to operate. Charging is required every couple of weeks and it is very easy. The cable is magnetically attached to the watch - similar to the magnetic adapter used on Apple's macbooks.

But Pebble's genius is that it is a perfectly usable watch, even when not paired to a phone. Its e-ink screen is always on, you don't have to press a button or lift your wrist. And the extra long battery means you only have to charge it every couple of weeks or even every month.
