Overall, I liked the stories. However, for me the problem was I don’t like what I call unfinished stories. I hope the authors decide to give us full books for these characters. I think they have the potential to be amazing books. I really like the take on the circus freaks. It was interesting.
I give this book 4 stars. I would recommend it if you are ok with not getting the full story for these characters. Think of it as a taste of what they could become.
I always find it hard to review anthologies. How do I give all authors what they deserve? What if one story is really really bad while the others are great? How do I stay fair if there’s an author I don’t like in the anthology?
Those and other thoughts went through my head when I started reading this book. I shouldn’t have worried. This anthology consist of eight novella length stories that are all situated in the Kipling carnival. The Kipling Carnival is not your typical run of the mill one, instead it offers a refuge to all those who doesn’t really fit into the “real world”. The freaks, those who have special talents and all others who seek a way out. Some of the stories were completed in the short length. Some ended on a cliffhanger, but almost all of them offered me a deeper message. Something to think about after finishing. Selflessness. That was what it boiled down to. Most of the characters were selfless. Their actions spoke from true heroism and I loved it.
It was amazing for me to see the different voices of the authors. All of them managed to give me heartwrenching feelings in their own style and I am glad that I read this anthology. I am glad, because now my tbr pile has become even bigger, because I added those authors to it. I want to see how the characters are going to be after I left them. What did they do? How did they solve their problems? I want to know and I can only warn each and every reader who picks up this anthology: You are going to want more!
All in all, because I connected to some characters/ stories more than to others and some stories had tiny plotholes and mistakes in them I am giving this anthology 3.5 stars, because I see a great potential and hope to read more of the Kipling Carnival freaks.
I've previously met Tia, Misty and Liz books so I was aware of the kind of outstanding sort of stories I was going to enjoy. But I had the opportunity to meet a bunch of new-to-me favorite authors too! A must read for sure! My only complain is I felt I needed more!
Each and every story is well written and full of mystery, magic and mayhem! This is truly a different set of stories, truly unique and yet touching and emotionally fulfilling tales of the wonderfully strange and exotic people that make up Kipling's traveling circus.
So come one and come all and see behind the scenes to the loves, laughs and dreams of the Peculiar lives of Circus Freaks
