Editorial Reviews

Review

"I felt the content was well updated with many new references. I think the chapters were very well written. With the great depth, the research highlights, and case studies I believe the texts does an excellent job promoting critical thinking. I especially liked the Research Highlights as I think it is really important for nursing students to see how helpful and applicable nursing research is to our practice."Sherry Knoppers RN, PhD, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"I found the text to be excellent. I would consider ordering this text instead of the one I've used in the past. I think the information is presented more clearly and I liked the art work that I could visualize in the chapters. The art work in the neurological chapter was excellent. In fact, I would say that they are some of the best I've seen in a book chapter. I found the questions at the end of the chapters to be excellent and useful to students. We use case studies in our course and I found the ones included in the chapters to be excellent."Susan Kennel, PhD, RN, ARNP, Assistant Professor, University of South Florida College of Nursing

I bought this book because it was a required book for my pediatric nursing class. I wish I had only bought the "Reviews and Rationales: Child Health Nursing" book by Hogan and saved my money by not buying this book though. The information is not well organized and it's hard to find information that is actually beneficial for learning how to begin caring for pediatric patients. It does have good information in it for someone who is not learning the basics of nursing care. Save your money and buy the "Reviews and Rationales" book for the basics. If you're actually thinking about going into the pediatric field of nursing, then I would suggest buying this book and reading it in your spare time to refine your knowledge (which is what I plan to do).

The section on advocating for gun control is patronizing at best. It assumes gun owners are idiots and need to be protected from themselves. The last person in the world I want gun safety advice from is from someone who never handled one and parrots the gun control talking points. The suggestions for promoting firearms safety are totally appropriate, but fail to mention who should do the training. The best organization for firearm safety training is the NRA and has age appropriate training programs for schools.

This book was required for my nursing class, and I didn't really like it.

Pros: it has nursing alert boxes that are very helpful
Cons: it jumps around with the topics, a box or chart relating to one section may be 3 or 4 pages (still within the chapter) past the section. Even if you only need to read a certain section in the chapter, make sure you go through the WHOLE chapter to see if there is a box or chart that is only a different page that relates to the section you needed. remember that when making notes, because you often have to go back and add something to a previous section of notes, because it wasn't with that section in the book.

The first couple dozen chapters have been mostly fluff. Ideas that could be adequately addressed in a couple sentences are stretched out for paragraphs. I frequently find myself wondering if I learned anything after reading entire pages. This was a required textbook for a class, so I had no choice but to by it. I certainly would not recommend it to anyone who is interesting in learning about pediatric nursing.

Reviewed this book as potentially being used with future nursing staff. This book advocates starkly dangerous advice for patients that I, as a physician of 11 years, would never advocate. Steer clear of this book for training staff. Too many mistakes to be usable as an educational tool.

Tries to use persuasion rather than just teach facts. Does not give any other possibilities other than the opinion they want you to have. Supposed to be a learning text, not a debate text

It's one thing to advocate for Firearms Safety in the home, and it's another thing to INDOCTRINATE nurses to advocate for gun restrictions and legislation. Because of the LIES listed in Chapter 1, page 11, this is not a PIER REVIEWED or FACT supported piece of documentation. The authors should be ashamed of themselves for this tragedy!

I purchased this book to get the online content and the access codes are only for instructors. I am extremely disappointed that I will not be able to use the website.
