Pedro Arrupe who was the Superior General to the Society of Jesus,(founded by Ignatius Loyola around 1522) from 1965-1983 gives us an account of his call to the society. "Ignatius was a man who received from God the special grace of grasping the mystical quintessence of the Gospel." . "The following can never be a matter of law only, it must flow from genuine intimacy with Christ and a desire to follow him in everything." Pedro Arrupe
Most of the writings in this book come from his addressing his fellow Jesuits and encouraging them in creating and shaping society to the Omega Point. Placing them in solidarity with the poor and the weak. Through the Jesuits the incarnation of Christ is present. " We must learn to "be" more and "have" less. We must learn what is "enough" to have. We are to be the message of love and liberation in the cause of the poor, the cause of justice. God's cause through Jesus Christ, through us. We are the bearer of hope to the world." Pedro Arrupe.
One can picture Pope Francis at many of these conferences. Pope Francis is leading us in the same direction as Ignatius Loyola and Pedro Arrupe.
In 1981 Pedro Arrupe suffered a very debilitating stroke and left his post as Superior General. In his last address in 1983, he issues forth a prayer to the Holy Spirit "Come Holy Spirit". "I desire your profound action in my soul, not only that you descend but that you repose in me and gift me the gifts of wisdom, intelligence, counsel, strength, knowledge of God. Transform me, inspire me, give me sensibility and fidelity." (Eph 3: 5-14)
