Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Little ones will enjoy the sturdy paper-over-board offering, Peekaboo Kisses by Barney Saltzberg. In the opening, a kitten covers its eyes ("Peekaboo! I see..."); readers lift the flap to find "Fluffy kitten kisses." Throughout, fabric patches in bold colors mimic the fur of each animal. Closing pages include a squeaker and mirror ("Peekaboo! I see.../ YOU!"). Ages 6mos.-4 yrs.

This is one of my 13-month-old daughter's absolute favorite books. It's one of those where we have to go through it 4-5 times before she's ready to put it down, and even then she often comes back to this book. Many times I've found her in her room, quietly turning the pages and making noises at the cute animals. I would highly recommend this book.

My granddaughter is 2 1/2 years old and she loves this book every time I read it to her. I would definitely recommend this book. My only suggestion would be to buy it sooner than I did. Little ones love playing peek-a-boo.

This book is very cute, and the price is right. The very simple subject material and low word volume make it an ideal 'story' for young babies. Unfortunately, the book's flimsyconstruction and very thin flaps make it much better suited for older toddlers who are able to understand how to lift flaps gently, and are no longer interested in chewing or drooling on books. My babies were 11 months old when I bought this for them, and while it initially held their attention, they were frustrated by the fact that they could not play with the book. I think they will be very bored by this by the time they're old enough to handle it.

"Peekaboo Kisses" by Barney Saltzberg.
Recently, I gave this book to my granddaughter, Tabitha, (22 months), who was obviously delighted. Each page brings up a different animal: kitten, puppy, sheep, duckling and then a mouse. As you say the words, "Peekaboo!", you open the flap of a page and there is the animal. Each animal has a tiny hole with the appropriate material: the "wool" for the sheep actually looks like some wool. The gray "fur" for the mouse, the last animal, is also a squeaker. An adult finger can cause the "Squeak!" every time, but Tabitha's little fingers had difficulty now and then.
Finally, you come to the last page. As it is opened (with the word, "Peekaboo!", of course), there is a metallic mirror where the young reader can recognize himself. When asked, "Who is that in the book?", my granddaughter would answer with her nickname, "Tabby". So, this book is excellent for both tactile training and self-recognition, while providing entertainment for both adult and child.

I bought this book for my son when he was 10 months old. He is now 16 months and still loves it. It's so tattered and torn that we had to buy him a new one. It't definitly a book you'll read over and over and over.

My kids love this book! Sometimes it's hard to tell whether the squeaky mouse page is their favorite or whether it's the last page with the mirror. Every page is interactive and has a soothing tactile element. After two years I had to buy a second one, because it was so popular in my house that the first one got worn out.

What child doesn't love the tactile match of lamb, bunny, puppy and mouse? With a squeaky sound on the last page, even? This book is a real winner and with just about 6 animals it is short enough to read over and over. Which is exactly what the child wants to do. Highly recommend it as a first book option.

My one-year-old loves this book, but the pages aren't very thick. They can be easily bent/torn, so we have to watch him carefully with it, unlike board books. They're definitely thick cardstock-type paper, but they can't handle a curious baby.
