I met Susan and Doug in 1993 as author/illustrator guest presenters at a grade school assembly where I taught elementary music. I was so inspired by Susan's insightful and delightful story, I asked if they would be interested to allow me to transform Peel and his adventures into a children's musical play production. Permission was granted and I immediately began creating the stage production of "Peel, The Extraordinary Elephant" and bringing the charming and playful characters to life! Just last week, on June 4, 2015, I directed this fun-filled show for the fourth time with 100+ grade school students in Dufur, Oregon. The students worked with me for two weeks in an in depth Fine Arts Experience that included handmade owl puppets, paper plate elephant masks, finely detailed painted waves, sponge painted name posters, large set painting in the impressionistic style of Van Gogh, marimba musical accompaniments, song, dance and drama. All the 1st through 6th graders studied Doug's colored pencil sketch and blend techniques in a mini version of the book with black and white drawings to practice. Next month I will be presenting Peel to a group of senior citizens who will make similar props and artwork, and play the parts just like the little ones for a show at the senior center!
Susan's story is timeless. The messages are rich in life lessons any age person can benefit from hearing. I hope this book never goes out of print!

This is an absolutely delightful picture story book. The story is told exclusively in rhyme. I wasn't sure on first glance at the book but, as soon as I started reading it to my grandson, it became clear just how clever it is. It's not rhyming for rhyming's sake-EVERY word is important and fits so perfectly to the story, none of them seem to be selected just for their 'rhymability'. Peel the Elephant meets various creatures in the little stories within the book. You can either read it all in one go or you could do an animal story per night. We are now on our fourth reading of this lovely book now! My grandson loves it-he likes to keep going back to it-especially the stories with Camille the camel in and he is fascinated with the music extracts. Susan Joyce is an artist but on this occasion, her husband Doug DuBosque provided the illustrations in the book. They are in lovely pastel shades and add so much appeal to the story and make it a beautiful presentation. I asked my grandson what he liked best about Peel The Extraordinary Elephant so I could add some feedback from him in my review and he said that his favourite characters are Peel and Camille and he says his favourite pictures besides Camille and Peel are the pictures of trees-he says those are the best pictures of trees he's ever seen. I know nothing about Art but I have to agree with him, the delicate colours and shading on these illustrations are exquisite.

My husband received an autographed copy of this book when the author came to his elementary school to read it. He has passed it down to our children and we are now using it for reading during home school. My children love Peel and enjoy reading about his adventures. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is written in a fun little rhyme.

I am 18 years old now, but I read this book when I was in the 1st grade. I remember the first time I read it like it was yesterday. It was funny, and very cute. This book is one of the few that I remember reading at that age. It really made an impression on me.
