I bought the Peerless Study Guide for the California C-7 contractor's license exam when it was recommended by a woman specializing in technical books for contractors. The subject matter is very dry and mostly very dated. But if you work through a few pages every day over about two months, you will find yourself at the exam well prepared and confident. Peerless has numerous test exam questions in every chapter. For most of the questions, I took to heart the suggestion that I read only the correct answers (which are conveniently given at the bottom of every quiz page), and this helped set my memory with the right information.

I did find that in my particular case, the state exam had been somewhat modernized so that there were no questions about old-fashioned low voltage relay circuits. There were questions instead about CAT-5 circuits.

You can take a weekend cram course, but remember first of all that you will simply be plopped into a room to read for yourself for seven hours because there are so many specialized licenses different people are studying for. In my case, it wasn't be enough exposure to the subject to give me confidence that I would pass. The Peerless book was a better and less expensive means to passing.
