- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2024I learned how to play when I went to visit my daughter when she was studying abroad. Her host family in Germany had taught it to her. I went home and immediately bought myself a set. But when my daughter came home, she stole it and took it off to college. Finally I've been able to get myself another copy. I like this one more than the "newer" one with the female pirates. The game is fun to play, though learning the rules is a bit hard the first time. Once you learn, the rules are easy to implement and remember. But I can't play with my daughter anymore, since she is cutthroat and wins every time.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2025This game is very fun for a game night with friends. The game takes a little time to pick up, but once folks are caught up with the rules, it is a very entertaining strategy game.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2016Wow! This one turned into an instant favorite with our games night group. Port Royal is a fairly quick game, simple to teach, no down time waiting for other players, light strategy, push your luck.
There are 5 different colors of ship cards. Each shows a number of coins you can get by taking the ship. It also has a number of swords required to repel it. The first part of your turn is drawing cards, face up, into your "harbor". If you draw two ships of the same color, you bust and your turn ends, unless you can repel the ship. If you have sailors with a greater or equal number of swords, you can repel a ship when you draw it.
When you are done drawing cards, you can take one or more cards, depending on how many colors of ships are showing. Take 1 card for 1-3 colors of ships, 2 cards for 4 colors, and 3 cards for 5 colors. If you take a ship card, you get the number of coins shown on the ship card, and it is discarded. There are also cards representing people, to take one of those, you pay coins equal to the cost shown on the card. The people have different game effects, as well as being worth some number of points. Sailors and pirates have swords which can repel ships. The governor allows you to take an extra card whenever you would take a card. The jester gives you a coin when anyone else busts. There are people who just have symbols that allow you to complete mission cards, worth points, and a few others.
Once the current player is done taking cards, the remaining cards are passed around the table, with each player having a chance to take a card in turn. If they do, they have to pay the active player one coin, in addition to the cost of the person, or from the coins they get from a ship if they take a ship. Then those cards are discarded, and it is the next players turn. When someone gets to 12 points, the game is done.
It is a fairly light game, but because of the ways that your cards are affected by the current player, and the opportunity to take cards each turn, everyone is involved every turn. If you have a jester, you want the current player to bust. If you are to the left of the active player and he has drawn a card you want, you are hoping for a chance to take it. If you draw a good card that you can't afford, you might bust just to keep anyone else from getting it, this happens with jesters especially. There's lots of cheering and hollering and encouraging in this game. Plenty of bad advice given as well. Our group has played it every time we get together since I picked it up.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2023This is a fun game with simple game play. Because of its simplicity I would normally spend closer to $20 on a game like this. Game comes with an alternative suggested ending to make it slightly more challenging.
The directions weren’t super clear at first. But once we got going it all made sense. We watched a YouTube video to help us.
Update: Our families played multiple times over the course of a week with another family. It’s fun for a variety of ages but best with 2-4 players. The more people playing, the longer each round takes. It was difficult to keep the game going when 5 pre-teens/teens were playing. Altering the rules to win at 10 points instead of 12 points, when 5 people are playing, might help.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2015This game is lots & lots of fun--more fun than you might think! After playing this, I decided to buy it for a friend who's into board games & card games, and I am absolutely glad I did. It can get pretty wild at times, but it's not cutthroat. The rules take a LITTLE MORE STUDY than you would think, but the rule book explains everything very well. For the price, the production is VERY HIGH. The artwork on the cards is GREAT!! The 2 most powerful person cards are the governor & the mademoiselle. Don't be afraid to push you luck at least a little bit in this game! The Tax increase card gives everyone a fighting chance, and keeps the game moving fast. For the price, this game is worth a LOT more than what you pay! It's probably both underrated and maybe even overlooked by many people. Coming from Germany, this game arrived VERY QUICKLY. If you like the pirates theme, you will LOVE this game. If you're still not sure, then watch the tutorial on You Tube. I feel this is one of the best card games of all time!!!

Frances AllanReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Easily Portable 45 Minute Game
This is a great game for 3-5 people (2 is OK, have played with 6).
It's fun, compact, easy to learn and feels quick because there's no attention gaps, you get a chance to act in everyone else's go. We play it a lot and this is a second set for son to take to uni.
It appeals to regular gamers and not-really gamers alike.
It's worth ditching the plastic tray (for space) and sleeving the cards (2 5/8ths x 3 5/8ths inch sleeves).
Port Royal is a push your luck game; you can take "ships" to give you money or buy the crew / assets you need a) get your victory points and/or b) give you playing advantages. And other players pay you commission for your leftover cards. But turn over two ships the same colour and you blow your turn. First to 12 victory points including an expedition wins.

KarmelReviewed in Italy on April 27, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Un piccolo gioiello!
Consigliato!
