D. Caroline Coile, Ph.D. has written 34 books and hundreds of magazine and scientific articles about dogs. She writes the monthly Breeder's Notebook column for Dog World magazine and the bi-monthly Nutrition column for the AKC Gazette. Her dog writing awards include the Dog Writer's Association of America Maxwell Award (eight times), the AKC Canine Health Foundation Award (twice), the Eukanuba Canine Health Award (twice), and the DWAA Denlinger Award. Her best-known book is Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds. She has also written two children's books about dogs.
Caroline holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Florida State University, with research interests in canine behavior, senses, genetics and neuropsychology. She has taught college classes in psychology, behavioral genetics, animal senses, and animal learning, among others. She has served as a canine consultant to the FAA and has served on the AKC Canine Health Foundation President's Council. She has appeared on television and radio shows, including NPR's Talk of the Nation and Australia's Breakfast Radio. She has been quoted in Newsweek magazine and USA Today.
On a practical level, Caroline has lived with dogs all of her life, and has competed in dog events since 1975. She is the only person to have owned Best in Show, Best in Field, High in Trial (obedience), and High in Trial (agility) salukis, and they were all owner-handled. Her dogs have included nationally ranked #1 show and #1 obedience salukis, and top-10 lure-coursing, agility, rally and racing salukis.

I recently took a rescue Peke. I had no idea of what this breed was like, and, although my senior Bubba is delightful, he has personality and health issues that are definitely peculiar to this breed. I ordered several books about Pekingese, and this little gem was the best book! I deals with pertinent personality aspects of the breed, and health issues as well. In fact, I have never read a dog book that was as helpful as this book is. It is a quick read, but gives important information, and I continue to use it as reference.

I found the book especially helpful in their explanation as to why my Peke does some of the things he does. He is very independent, knows what commands mean, and doesn't always choose to follow them. He has always hated to be brushed but since reading the portion on how to brush him he has calmed some and allows brushing for short periods of time now. I was surprised to learn that Peke's do not transfer their loyality well. This is the third Peke we have owned and the only one we have gotten as a puppy. The other two were very loyal after a short period of time. One was an older dog which we knew was blind in one eye but learned later that he was blind in both eyes. He was an amazing dog as he went up and down stairs and ran free in the yard. Just don't move the furniture.

I do wish it contained a considerable more amount on the complexities of dealing with this breed's temperament and sometimes challenging characteristics. Es führt etliche Beispiele zur Pflege an, gibt aber auch kompetende Hinweise zu den gesundheitlichen Problemen dieser Rasse: dem Nasen und Atmungsproblem, der Hitzeempfindlichkeit, verstärkt durch dichtes langes Fell und die bei Peken bekannten Augenprobleme. Zur Behebung gibt die Autorin Ratschläge und Anleitungen.
Außer den bekannten "reizenden Pekingesenköpfen mit kurzer Nase" werden Abbildungen gezeigt, auf denen eine bereits länger gezüchtete Schnauze zu sehen ist. Die Autorin beweist damit, dass auch diese Züchtungen ansprechend aussehen.
Das Buch ist für Pekingesenbesitzer unverzichtbar.

This book was exactly what I needed. I am about to pick up my Peke puppy and have never owned a dog before so wanted something I could refer to for tips, history and guidance. The book is well laid out with very simple instructions and an excellent page on what to look out for health wise, food etc. I think this will be a very useful guide once the puppy comes and have already read it cover to cover to prepare, obviously the real test will be when little Ichabod comes home as i am sure he will have his own ideas after reading about their temperament!
