About Us
It all began in 1976 with a hundred feet of twine around a hockey stick handle and a metal weight to serve as a mini anchor. Fashioned by scuba enthusiast Dave Parker in his garage in Torrance, CA, this innovative safety tool was designed to bob on the water’s surface to mark locations for divers. Dave dubbed his brainchild the “Pelican Float.” He devised this gadget because he knew it had the potential to save lives. He was right.
Eager to expand upon his vision, Dave was soon hard at work designing his next product: a superior first-aid kit for divers. The cases were rugged, durable, and built to keep the contents stored inside safely protected from water and dust. The product was a hit with divers and others who tossed out the first-aid supplies and used the case to protect other valuables.

Zipper pockets are great, long one on the end held my long handled titanium sporks, everything else was odds and ends.
I want several more.
A fair number of reviewers have said that they had to drill pilot holes for the screws before they could install this product. I think this is VERY bad advice! If you make a mistake and drill too deeply, you will break through the outer shell of the case. Having one or more small holes in the lid of the case is going to greatly reduce the moisture and dust protection the case provides, which is probably one of the reasons you bought this case in the first place!
Don't take a chance of ruining your case with a drill, because you don't need one anyway! Simply use an awl to make the existing screw-indents a bit larger and deeper. Then screw the screws in WITHOUT the organizer. Then take the screws out, and put the organizer in place. Now you can easily put the screws back in.
Some reviewers have complained that it's too hard to screw the screws in through the netting. I imagine this would be true if you were using the wrong size Phillips head screwdriver. I used a Number 1 size, and it worked just fine. Use a larger size, and you might have the same problem as the others.
So, in summary, to install this organizer, all you need is an awl and a small Phillips head screwdriver ... that's it. It shouldn't take more than ten minutes to complete the task.
I love this organizer and think it is a wonderful addition to my case ... I don't know how I went a year without it. I'm sorry that the negative reviews kept me from getting it sooner.
Other reviewers point out that by taking the thick foam out of the lid and replacing it with this organizer, your camera equipment is less protected. While this is true, you have to consider what your case will be subjected to. I don't take my case any places where this lessened protection will be an issue. For my needs, I'm very happy to have somewhat less protection in exchange for a significant amount of extra storage space.
For those who will have their cases subjected to much violence or pressure or abuse, you might want to keep the foam in the lid rather than this organizer. As I mentioned before, it all depends on what your needs are. As for me, I have absolutely no regrets.
The lid organizer itself is not just fabric and mesh - the pockets are attached on some kind of rigid plastic sheet to be screwed down in six pre-determined places where the case lid has raised plastic stubs obviously designed to provide the thickness required to accommodate the screws.
This means that this thickness is lost volume: the lid organizer sheet is raised by that amount (maybe 3/16"), thus slightly decreasing the available inner space, but also providing some elasticity. This is welcome as obviously the lid organizer replaces the foam that came with the case.
The craftsmanship is excellent as I came to expect from Pelican.
After reading some other reviews, I was gearing up for an epic installation but it turned out to be not that hard.
The pre-drilled holes in the case cover, if any, are clearly insufficient, so I just used a screwdriver and installed the screws to half-depth in the right place first, without the lid organizer. Then I removed them, placed the lid organizer and put the screws back, this time all the way.
Total: 10 minutes including fetching the tools - and putting them back (this last part for my wife).
Some reviewers suggested that installing the bottom left screw first would allow the installer to fold the lid organizer so as to access the hole - not so for me.
The rigid plastic sheet on the back prevents folding.
On the other hand I didn't have much of a problem with the installation.
I suspect this confusion comes from the at least two versions of the lid organizer that various reviewers have been installing.
Usage
This is really a tradeoff: good shock-absorption on the lid side, vs. actually using that volume which is quite big.
I opted for the latter to store there a number of small items I would otherwise be chasing around the case: lenspen, color-checker, wireless remote triggers, cold shoes, etc.
Still I have a portion of the original foam in the vertical pocket to protect the main camera body and one lens.
Will the mesh and zipper hold with time? No way to say yet. I will update this review when I know.
All in all it works for me and I would buy it again.
