The story is one that catches and demands your attention right from the start, it is so challenging your beliefs, and raises your imagination of, is this truth or fiction. I loved the twist and turns of the young man meeting up with the crusty old ambassador of Pelican Bay and his underwater city. As you get into the book there is no idea of what is on the next page, you are more than drawn into it, you are finding you are a person in this story so much that you forget that you have to leave, finding you never wanted to in the first place!!!
The drawing of intrigue, adveneture leaves you wondering where this author has been hiding. This is the second in a series of books that has love, romance, paranormal, fiction, truth, intrigue, suspense, horror, childhood curiousity that leaves you wanting more out of this up and coming Author who truly proves he is going somewhere in the life of literary world.
Congrats in making it into the Author library of truth and fiction!!!! Mr. Jesse Giles Chtistiansen, I cant wait for your next book in the series of 3 all together! Bring it on!!!
Far more than being a simple story revolving around Ethan Hodges, Morgan Olinsworth and Captain Shelby, Pelican Bay by Jesse Giles Christiansen, becomes an expression of humankind and very convincingly throws light on certain aspects of nature that are mysterious and sometimes unexplainable.
Jesse’s novel has been skilfully constructed and very beautifully written. The story has incredible images and descriptions that bring Pelican Bay to life. The power of the story lies in the mystery surrounding Captain Shelby who as the novel progresses, acquires a legendary status. There is no ostentation to Jesse’s writing and a whole world of beauty exists in simplicity. Phrases like- “We cannot stop the waves of misfortune, but we can learn to ride them, so that misfortune somehow feels like fortune”, echo the courage and commitment that one sees often in Hemingway’s novels. In an attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding Captain Shelby, Ethan bravely attempts to “pillage the sea of her secrets”, and discovers something that would change his life forever. This brilliant novel interspersed with flashes of intense philosophy compels the reader to introspect and learn.
It is a must read for all those who believe that “mastering fear is a matter of faith, not understanding.” It makes us think about the life and values that we hold in high esteem in our so called upright civilized world. What is even more striking is the author’s notion of love and the fact that it has the power to rise above the ordinary and merges with the highest spiritual level of thought. This book is perfect for young readers who will not only love the enigmatic Captain Shelby but also imbibe some valuable lessons of life.
I personally loved this book. It was beautifully written. It was also a real page turner. I was hooked until the very end of the book. It reminds me of this movie I once watched called Deeply. Kirsten Dunst plays one of the leading roles in it. The stories aren’t exactly alike, but they are similar. Both of them are very beautiful.
I honestly felt that a few scenes were brushed over. I felt that they could have been detailed a little more. I get that they didn’t fully go with the point of the story though so they didn’t need to be detailed too much. It would have just been nice to see. Other than that, I didn’t have any problems with the book. It was detailed well even if some of it was rushed over. It was greatly edited as well.
I fully recommend this book to teenagers and adults alike. I think both will get full enjoyment out of this story. I once participated in an event where there was a character war. Captain Shelby was in it. I voted against him. Had I read this story before participating in that, I would have voted for him. I fell in love with this story and the characters in it. I am pretty sure you will too!
